The I Choose Reading Project
Even though Kenya’s literacy level stands 82.9%, other data reveals that only 4 in 10 (40%) grade 4 students can appropriately read and comprehend a basic grade 3 level english story. In order to address the above gap, improve the learning outcomes and increase the students reading cultere, I Choose Life - Africa, Book Aid International, Laikipia County, the national government among others launched a reading project in October 2025.

In this project, I Choose Life-Africa has today supplied 7,400 Books and libraries to 8 intervention Schools Laikipia West Sub County. The initiative was laucnched at 1:00 pm today at Rumuruti DEB Comprehensive school. In attendance were Eng. Mike Mutungi, CEO-I Choose Life-Africa, Sub County Director of Education, TSC Sub County Director, 8 Heads of the schools, students from the schools among others

In Kenya, youth unemployment remains one of the most pressing challenges of our time. With up to 67% of young people aged under 34 are either unemployed or underemployed, and nearly 1 million youth entering the job market each year to find limited formal opportunities, the gap between potential and opportunity continues to widen.

Through our interventions and programs, I Choose Life – Africa is stepping in to bridge this divide.

By equipping young people with market-relevant skills, fostering entrepreneurship, and strengthening linkages between industry and academia, ICL is creating pathways for youth to transition into meaningful livelihoods. Our work goes beyond training: focusing on holistic across health, education, and economic inclusion.

At a time when Kenya’s youth bulge could either be a crisis or a catalyst, investing in young people is no longer optional, it is essential.

The future of work in Kenya will depend on how boldly we act today.
