On 3 October, WildlifeDirect joined the 10th Landscape Game Count, organised by the Athi-Kapiti Wildlife Conservancies Association, bringing together conservationists, students, community members and partners across the Athi-Kapiti landscape.

At Swara Plains Conservancy, the team took part in the morning game count, recording 522 wildlife observations across birds, grazers, browsers and carnivores.

Our team included 11 community children, 8 students, and 9 WildlifeDirect staff and interns, making the experience an opportunity not only to collect important wildlife data, but also to learn directly from the landscape and connect with others working to protect it.

The day also provided valuable opportunities to network with conservation organisations.

We partnered with Moving Mountains, who provided the Overlander that supported our team throughout the day.

What happens when conservation learning comes to life? 🦏

For 32 learners from New Hope Initiative School in Kenya, it meant seeing a rhino in the wild.

To mark World Rhino Day, students who successfully completed WildlifeDirect’s Kifaru Challenge visited Nairobi National Park with two teachers — putting their learning into practice as they tracked rhinos, explored their habitat, and observed the relationships between rhinos and other species.

The Kifaru Challenge is designed to do more than teach children about rhinos. Through hands-on activities, conservation films, learning modules, and school-based action, it gives young people the knowledge and confidence to become wildlife champions.

And it’s reaching thousands.

This year alone, the Kifaru Challenge reached 114 schools and nearly 5,000 learners. Since its launch, the program has connected more than 8,000 children across East Africa with conservation education focused on some of the continent’s most iconic species.

Because protecting rhinos takes more than protecting the animals themselves. It means protecting habitats. Preventing poaching. Reducing human-wildlife conflict. Understanding the ecosystems that support them. And inspiring the next generation to care enough to protect them.

Sometimes conservation starts with a lesson. And sometimes, it starts with seeing a rhino for the very first time. 🦏

👀 𝗦𝗻𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗸 - Children aged 10-15 from Kajiado County, and university students from Multimedia University of Kenya and Africa Nazarene University have been learning about wild animals and plants at the WildlifeDirect Field Lab for months - this weekend we put that knowledge to the test in our first participation in the Athi Kapiti Game Count: Binoculars, notebooks📒, field guides, and cameras all loaded 📸

Imagine leaving the dust, grime, noise, smells and chaos of an urban slum, your home, to spend a day in the serenity of nature. Fresh air, a cacophony of ear splitting car horns replaced with birdsong, your view of masses of people, motorbikes, disorganized buildings and, piles of trash replaced with open plains as far as the eyes can see. , Road rage and tempers flaring replaced with families of ducks calmly swimming in formation, a skyline of construction cranes replaced with giraffe, and a floor of mud, broken concrete and rubbish, is a sea of grass and dotted acacia trees. Nairobi Park is a gem, the home of giants, black and white rhinos, giraffe, hippo, buffalo, and lion, and right in the heart of our capital city just minutes away from Kibra, Africas biggest slum.

On World Rhino Day WildlifeDirect and partners Conservation Nation and Moving Mountains, made a difference for children and rhinos. We took a group of students in Kibra, and their teachers, on their first trip into Nairobi Park to see rhinos. These young conservationists were the first of over 4,000 students to receive their Kifaru Challenge certificates and badges after completing the module. They spotted many species and had a life changing day out.

Our Nature Positive School clubs give over 13,000 children across the region access to award winning relevant fun conservation films, and lessons in conservation and environmental protection including disaster preparedness. Many of the schools also visit our field lab, the first conservation area for kids where immersion in nature includes art, science and fun. We know that just on me trip to a park can be a life changing experience, and we thank KWS for creating a season of special rates for children.

Our dream is to take 1 million children on a learning journey in conservation and regenerative living by supporting educators in public schools with content, tools and means to sustain vibrant clubs and bring children to our world class parks.

Rhinos are more than a symbol of the wild. They are part of healthy ecosystems and a natural heritage we have a responsibility to protect for generations to come.

Yet their future depends on more than protecting rhinos alone. It depends on protecting habitats, supporting communities, preventing poaching, reducing human-wildlife conflict, and inspiring the next generation to care for nature.
