A new partnership for impact across Africa takes flight.

UNHCR and ASKY Airlines have announced the start of a new collaboration through the signing of a cooperation agreement
Through this partnership, UNHCR and ASKY Airlines will explore collaboration on skills development, employment pathways, entrepreneurship and awareness-raising initiatives that support refugee inclusion and self-reliance.

Together, we look forward to exploring opportunities that support inclusion, self-reliance and solutions for forcibly displaced people across the continent.

Comfort gained new customers, made sales and built lasting connections at a livelihoods fair in Benue State. Her next goal is to open a second shop.

After arriving in Nigeria from Cameroon in 2019, Comfort participated in baking training through a UNHCR-supported programme. She later built a business selling palm oil, honey and other products sourced from farmers in Benue State.

Organized by UNHCR, Jobberman Nigeria and the Benue State Government, the fair connected more than 500 displaced people with employers, financial institutions and market opportunities. First City Monument Bank also opened accounts on-site and engaged entrepreneurs interested in accessing financial services.

Collaboration among displaced communities, government, humanitarian organizations and private-sector partners can help expand access to the services, networks and markets that support livelihoods.

Marwa was one year from completing her Computer Science degree in El Fasher, Sudan, when war forced her from her home.

Now in a refugee camp in Chad, she has returned to her studies, working toward the degree the crisis interrupted but did not end.

For refugee women and girls, access often determines whether education continues at all. Private sector partners play a direct role in that access, through digital skills programs, connectivity and learning infrastructure.

This World Literacy Day, we are reminded that literacy shapes more than reading and writing. It shapes access to opportunity, confidence and the ability to build a future.

For refugees and displaced learners, education is often one of the first things disrupted by displacement. Through partnerships with the private sector, UNHCR is helping keep learning within reach and build stronger pathways to skills and opportunity.

Today, we recognise partners across Africa supporting that work: Mastercard Foundation, KGL Foundation, Moran Publishers, Canaan Group of Companies, Amadeus University and ALX Nigeria.

These partnerships demonstrate that literacy is a shared responsibility, between people, institutions and the systems that connect them.

In Cameroon, Trust ran businesses and farmed land. But when he fled to Ghana because of conflict, he had to start over again with a single plot.

Today, that plot has grown into a farm employing six people, both refugees and Ghanaians, supplying organic vegetables to local markets and businesses.

He came to the Ghana Refugee Agribusiness and Sustainability Programme (GRASP) Dialogue held in Accra, Ghana, with a clear message: Displaced people have talent. What they need is opportunity.

The 50 participants at the GRASP Dialogue, including government leaders, private sector, and humanitarian actors, listened and explored how to turn stories like Trust's into a scalable model.

ACCRA, Ghana – "Many displaced people possess talents and potential," Cameroonian refugee and farmer, Trust, told participants. "Among them are entrepreneurs, doctors, teachers, and skilled professionals. What they often need is trust and opportunity."

A blow dryer. A laptop. A camera. A constitution. A reusable sanitary pad.

Each object was chosen by a young refugee woman to represent what she is building: a business, a career, a creative practice, stronger protection of rights or a solution to a challenge in her community.

This International Youth Day, we recognize young refugee women who are developing their skills, pursuing their goals and creating opportunities for themselves and others.

Through the UNHCR–Mastercard Foundation partnership, refugee and displaced youth across Africa are accessing skills development, mentorship, networks and livelihood opportunities.

The scale of economic potential within displacement deserves more attention within the private sector in Africa. One that goes beyond humanitarian aid and into value chains and business access.

This morning, in Cape Town, UNHCR and the Amahoro Coalition brought together private sector leaders among other stakeholders for "The Opportunity in Displacement," a roundtable on advancing the economic inclusion of forcibly displaced people and host communities in South Africa.

Across South Africa, displaced people are already building businesses, bringing skills into the workforce and contributing to local economies. Creating access to jobs, markets and investment can open more pathways for displaced communities to actively participate in and contribute to economic growth.

Refugee inclusion is not only a humanitarian imperative, it's an economic one too, capable of driving shared growth for business and people alike.
