The scale of economic potential within displacement deserves more attention within the private sector in Africa. One that goes beyond humanitarian aid and into value chains and business access.

This morning, in Cape Town, UNHCR and the Amahoro Coalition brought together private sector leaders among other stakeholders for "The Opportunity in Displacement," a roundtable on advancing the economic inclusion of forcibly displaced people and host communities in South Africa.

Across South Africa, displaced people are already building businesses, bringing skills into the workforce and contributing to local economies. Creating access to jobs, markets and investment can open more pathways for displaced communities to actively participate in and contribute to economic growth.

Refugee inclusion is not only a humanitarian imperative, it's an economic one too, capable of driving shared growth for business and people alike.

The conversation continues at the African Private Sector Forum on Displacement.

Conflict and displacement have disrupted access to higher education for young people across Sudan.

Through the UNHCR–Mastercard Foundation partnership, Sarah and Azhari have continued their studies, received financial and psychological support, and strengthened their plans for the future.

Sarah is pursuing an Information Management degree while working as a kindergarten teacher. Azhari is completing his Civil Engineering studies and hopes to use his skills to help rebuild communities affected by conflict.

In 2025, the partnership supported nearly 400 refugee and internally displaced students to pursue higher education in Sudan.

What if the first thing you knew about Dadaab was that it's home to 15,000 businesses?

Located in northeastern Kenya, Dadaab is a refugee-hosting municipality and commercial hub where refugee and host communities work, trade and build businesses within a shared local economy.

That was the starting point for a recent roundtable convened by UNHCR Partnerships Africa and ICC Kenya, bringing together business leaders to explore Dadaab's investment potential across finance, technology, agriculture, mobility and skills.

Thank you to ICC Kenya and all participating organizations for bringing your expertise, ideas and energy to the table.

Next on the agenda: a visit to Dadaab to meet its entrepreneurs and identify opportunities to build and invest together.

This World Youth Skills Day, we celebrate young refugee and displaced women who are turning skills into opportunity, income and making a positive impact on their communities.

Mariam is using welding and fabrication to support her siblings and train other young people.
Pang is putting her physiotherapy training into service, helping people manage pain, regain movement and live more independently.
Monica is using farming, poultry and insect larvae production to support her family and work alongside other women building a shared livelihood initiative.

Their stories show what skills can make possible when young people are empowered and nurtured. The UNHCR–Mastercard Foundation partnership is working to expand these pathways for millions of refugee and displaced youth across Africa, helping young people develop relevant skills, connect with opportunity and work towards greater self reliance.

Mohamed Touré's journey has been shaped by football across generations.

After his family rebuilt their lives from Guinea to Australia, he now represents the country that became their new home and plays for Norwich City FC.

Football is more than a game. For displaced people, it can be a lifeline opening doors to belonging, opportunity and success.
Mohamed Touré is part of UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency Gamechanging Team, standing alongside other players whose lives have been shaped by displacement.
