Some survivors speak months and years later. The time it takes does not change the truth of what happened.

It may have been abuse by a relative or someone trusted in the home. It may have happened at school, in a place that was meant to feel safe. It may have been violence by a partner or harassment in a workplace that went unreported.

Some carry memories from childhood that were never understood or named at the time. Others were silenced by fear, stigma or lack of support.

Every survivor deserves to be heard, believed and supported, no matter when they choose to come forward. There is no deadline on healing and there should be no barrier to care.

At Wangu Kanja Foundation, support remains available through safe, confidential and survivor-centred services.

If you are ready to speak, know that help is there. You are not alone, our Toll Free Line 1519 is available for confidential support.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month.

It is a time to confront a reality many still avoid. Sexual violence continues to affect individuals, families, and communities, often in silence. Behind every statistic is a person whose safety, dignity and trust have been violated.

Prevention begins with us. It is in how we teach consent, how we challenge harmful behaviour and how we respond when someone speaks.

At the Wangu Kanja Foundation , we continue to support survivors through access to psychosocial care, legal guidance and safe reporting pathways, while also working with communities and institutions to strengthen prevention and response systems.

This month and beyond, we must commit to action.

Being a victim or survivor of r**e, defilement or sexual harassment does not make you less deserving of dignity, safety or respect.

It does not reduce your worth or take away your right to education, healthcare, work, love, family or independence. Violence is something that happened to you and not something that defines who I am.

Survivors deserve belief, support and access to justice, not blame or silence. You are entitled to heal at your own pace, to pursue our dreams and to live full lives without stigma.

A society that claims to value justice must protect and support survivors.
