The Youth Cafe exists to model and advance youth-led approaches towards sustainable development, social equity, democratic governance, and economic viability practices by utilising innovative research, policy, and advocacy actions. Background information
The Youth Cafe is a not-for-profit pan-African youth-led and youth-serving organization with its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya and a Theory of C

hange which serves as its Pathway For Action, Sustainability, Results, Learning, and Adaptation. Since its founding in 2012, The Youth Cafe has been working with young men and women in Kenya and around Africa as a pioneer in advancing youth-led approaches toward achieving sustainable development, social equity, innovative solutions, community resilience, and transformative change. To date, The Youth Cafe has reached over 2.2 million young men and women with its projects and attracted major partners such as USAID, Ford Foundation, Google, International Challenge Fund, to mention a few. While active on a number of cross-cutting issues, The Youth Cafe works mainly in eight priority areas to which it brings a multidisciplinary and multi-perspective approach: Peace and Security, Including Preventing Violent Extremism; Governance and Political Inclusion(Remittances and Accountability); Culture, Arts, and Sports; Education and Skills; Business, Job Creation and Entrepreneurship, Universal Health Coverage, Environmental Preservation, and Climate Change. The Eight Pillars of The Youth Cafe provide an essential organizing structure for the development and implementation of its various programs and initiatives, which all play a critical role in reducing youth deprivation and socio-economic and political empowerment of young people in the continent. The Youth Cafe’s current strategic plan looks at today’s youth bulge as an opportunity for development and economic growth and establishes pathways to tackle the many issues facing our youth specifically. To this effect, they Partner with Young People; Leverage Research, Learning, and Adaptation; Cultivate Sustainability and Self Reliance, and Advance Gender-responsive Youth Programming. This is why they are the leading organisation for implementing a broad range of cutting-edge positive youth development programs that utilize innovative research, policy, and advocacy actions. Our work is underpinned by a set of principles including to build a more relevant, sustainable, and effective enabling environment for education and work systems for young people, that recognise their rights and will; Involve young people at all levels in decision-making processes that will affect their lives; Partner with young people to build a better, more resilient world for all generations; and frame youth programs on a gender-responsive Rights-Based Approach (RBA), implying that young people are considered as ‘rights-holders. With a combined individual and organisational membership of 147,000 and a monthly digital reach of 400k, The Youth Cafe works with marginalised sections of youth such as youth living with disability, youth living in informal settlements, young women and girls, minority youth, indigenous youth among others. With a reach in over 22 countries in Africa, they are able to reach and engage with the youth and marginalised populations in our different programming under our 8 thematic areas through the diverse and individual organisational partnerships that we have. Summary of our work
We provide a more relevant, sustainable and effective enabling environment for education and work systems for young people. To date, The Youth Cafe’ has reached over 2.2 million young men and women with our projects and through the support of our partners. Our program is aimed at tackling the many issues facing our youth through partnering with young people; leveraging research, learning and adaptation; cultivating sustainability and self-reliance and advancing Gender-responsive Youth Programming. We believe in inclusion and diversity and work with marginalized sections of youth such as youth living; with disability, in informal settlements, and indigenous youth. As the leading organization for implementing positive youth development programs, we ensure that all youth have the opportunity to develop and better themselves. Challenges we are addressing
It is approximated that 75% of Africa’s total population is below the age of 35 filling our continent with incredible potential and energy. But despite all this, factors such as poor distribution of healthcare, education, employment, and even water sanitation facilities have crippled their potential. Through our expertise, international network of partners and youth-led approaches toward achieving sustainable development, social equity, innovative solutions, community resilience and transformative change; we have managed to help a majority of youth unlock their potential. Now, imagine, what would our young people accomplish if allowed to unlock their full potential? Solutions we offer
The Youth Café follows the Theory of Change to carry out eight catalytic action driven and progressive activities for the sake of helping young citizens, these include: Ensuring peace and security for the youth by actively involving stakeholders to avert their participation in cases of violence and extremism, we regulate seamless flows of knowledge transfer to help educational and skill based institutions directly increasing awareness and access to employment opportunities for youth. We actively work to combat the effects of climate change and environmental degradation. We regularly push for changes in the regulatory framework to mobilize domestic resources and eradicate poverty. Plans to promote improved access to healthcare and general health support against drug abuse and mental health have been set up. We have managed to set up a growing incubation program to support unfunded ideas by offering them startup capitals. Lastly, we represent accountability initiatives for governance and political inclusion opportunities for young people. Long Term Impact
Our motivation and goal is to see every young person and youth organization in Africa benefit from The Youth Café towards a sustainable, entrepreneurial, and innovative future by connecting them with new ideas, skills and people. Donations of all sizes help us grow our mission as an organization of working with young people in Kenya and around Africa to foster community resilience, propose innovative solutions, drive social progress, youth empowerment and inspire political change. The Youth Café serves as a transformative and empowering force capable of showing ways of bringing Africa and the rest of the world closer in a win-win partnership, improving youth welfare and revitalizing communities

Yesterday during the Ruai Girls High School AGM, students took to the stage through a powerful skit to demonstrate and share some of the lessons they have been learning through the SAFE-MIT in-school sessions on safe migration and the risks of irregular migration.

In the presence of parents, teachers, and other stakeholders, the performance reflected not only the students’ understanding of the subject, but also the dedication and commitment of the teachers who have continued to champion these sessions within schools.

This moment was a strong reminder that SAFE-MIT is going beyond classroom discussions and beginning to spark wider community conversations around safe and informed migration choices.

We celebrate the teachers of Ruai Girls for their passion, creativity, and commitment to ensuring that young people are empowered with knowledge that can shape safer futures.

SAFE-MIT (Safe Migration Information and Training) is funded by the European Union, contracted by International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) through the MMD Grant Facility, and implemented by Seefar Foundation in partnership with The Youth Cafe (TYC) in Kenya.

The final day of STRI4SocietyWeek 2026 at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), Nairobi, marked the successful conclusion of a week-long national engagement focused on strengthening Kenya’s science, technology, research, and innovation ecosystem.

The closing ceremony was officially officiated by H.E. Dr. Hon. Musalia Mudavadi, Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, Kenya, alongside Dr. Betty Muganda, Principal Secretary for Higher Education and Research, and Prof. Shaukat Abdulrazak, Principal Secretary for Science, Research and Innovation. The event also brought together ambassadors, researchers, innovators, academia, industry leaders, development partners, and students from across Kenya and beyond.

In his remarks, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to positioning science, technology, research, and innovation at the centre of national transformation and sustainable development. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that research moves beyond academic output and translates into practical, scalable solutions that address societal needs, strengthen industries, and support inclusive economic growth.

A major highlight of the closing day was the official launch of the Masterplan for Research Financing and Capacity Strengthening, a strategic framework aimed at enhancing research funding, strengthening institutional capacity, and accelerating the development of globally competitive homegrown innovations.

Moving forward, The Youth Café remains committed to supporting youth-led innovation through mentorship, capacity building, innovation platforms, and policy engagement, ensuring that young people are equipped to transform ideas into impactful and sustainable solutions for development.

Yesterday, one of the most powerful questions raised during Day 3 of STRI4Society Week strongly resonated with The Youth Café’s mission of advancing youth inclusion, innovation, and social transformation across Africa:
𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨 𝐰𝐞 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦 𝐨𝐫 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬?

The discussions emerging from the session on “𝐄𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭-𝐎𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬” challenged conventional approaches to Science, Technology, Research and Innovation (STRI), emphasizing that the future of innovation must not only focus on developing frontier technologies, but also on expanding the frontier of inclusion itself.

The session brought together distinguished leaders and experts including PS State Department for Science, Research and Innovation Prof. Prof. Shaukat Abdulrazak, PS Cabinet Affairs Dr.Idris Dokota,PhD,CBS, Fiona Wanjiku, CEO of Milazzo Institute, Purity Ngina, CEO of the National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC), and Nicholas Ozor, Executive Director of the African Technology Policy Studies Network (ATPS) Studies Network, who moderated the discussion.

The session emphasized that achieving inclusive and impactful innovation requires more than advancing technology alone. Speakers highlighted the importance of equitable access, evidence-based policymaking, inclusive financing, multidisciplinary collaboration, and intentionally positioning youth, women, persons with disabilities, and marginalized communities at the center of innovation systems as active co-creators of change.

At The Youth Café, we remain committed to amplifying youth voices, bridging the gap between policy and practice, and fostering ecosystems where no one is left behind.

Yesterday, The Youth Cafe joined government leaders, diplomats, researchers, innovators, private sector actors, development partners, and young changemakers at the official opening of 𝐒𝐓𝐑𝐈𝟒𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐲𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐊𝐞𝐧𝐲𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐚 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐞 (𝐊𝐈𝐂𝐂), Nairobi.

The opening sessions convened distinguished leaders including PS State Department for Science, Research and Innovation Prof. Prof. Shaukat Abdulrazak, Ambassador of Italy to Kenya H.E. Vincenzo Del Monaco, Ambassador of the European Union to Kenya H.E. Henriette Geiger, and Mark Senteu of Africa Shell, who shared powerful reflections on the role of science, innovation, and partnerships in shaping resilient economies and sustainable societies.

A message that strongly resonated across the discussions was the urgent need to strengthen support systems for researchers, innovators, and emerging talent. As Prof. Shaukat Abdulrazak emphasized, “Research is not an academic luxury, but a national necessity.”

The discussions further reinforced the undeniable impact of research on everyday life and economic progress. Mark Senteu of Africa Shell noted that “Everything we are right now is as a result of research”

Equally compelling was the reminder from H.E. Vincenzo Del Monaco that “Science means humanity,” emphasizing that innovation must remain people-centred, inclusive, and grounded in solving real societal challenges.

As Kenya and the European Union mark 50 years of partnership, H.E. Henriette Geiger highlighted the importance of sustained global collaboration in advancing research and innovation.

At The Youth Café, our continued commitment remains focused on strengthening youth-led innovation and creating platforms that equip young people with the opportunities, networks, and partnerships needed to transform ideas into impact.

Yesterday, At the STRI4Society Week Summit, The Youth Café was honored to participate in the session “𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐏𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐨 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭: 𝐆𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐞𝐱𝐭 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧,” delivered by Prof. Simone Severini alongside distinguished leaders including PS State Department for Science, Research and Innovation Prof. Prof. Shaukat Abdulrazak, Ambassador of Ireland Caitríona Ingoldsby, and Ambassador of Italy Vincenzo Del Monaco.

The session underscored a powerful reality: the future of innovation, science, and economic transformation will be determined by how intentionally we invest in young people today and how effectively we create systems that enable them to move from potential to impact.

A key highlight from the discussions; Strengthening partnerships between Kenyan universities, research institutions, innovators, and industry players was emphasized as critical in developing the human capital needed to drive Africa’s innovation future.

In her passionate address on gender inclusion in STEM, Ambassador Caitríona Ingoldsby challenged the outdated perception that science and technology are male domains and called for more women engineers, scientists, and technology leaders in Kenya.

Her closing message to Kenya’s youth was both affirming and inspiring: your ideas matter, your leadership matters, and your future belongs in every laboratory, innovation hub, and boardroom.

At The Youth Café, we remain committed to championing youth-led innovation, strengthening collaboration across sectors, and creating opportunities that empower young people to lead conversations shaping the future of science, technology, research, and innovation.

At the STRI4Society week convening, The Youth Cafe, represented by Cidney Njeri is presenting the Youth Innovation Playbook: A Co-Created Framework for Strengthening Africa–Global STI Partnerships and Youth-Led Innovation Ecosystems; a body of work grounded in the belief that young people are already building solutions, and systems must evolve to better recognise, support, and invest in that reality.

Developed collaboratively with researchers, entrepreneurs, and innovators across Africa and Europe, the playbook highlights the urgent need for more inclusive, connected, and responsive innovation ecosystems. More importantly, it opens critical conversations on bridging the gap between policy, research, and the lived realities of young innovators.

The playbook contributes to STRI4Society Week’s broader vision of connecting policy, research, innovation, and practice by strengthening youth-led innovation, cross-sector collaboration, and equitable Africa–global STI partnerships.

Ultimately, this work is about shifting from youth consultation to youth co-creation; from fragmented initiatives to connected ecosystems; and from ideas on paper to measurable community impact.

The Youth Café had the privilege of hosting Professor Mehari Taddele Maru at The Youth Café offices for a productive follow-up engagement focused on advancing youth leadership, skills development, and innovation through collaborative learning, capacity strengthening, and cross-continental partnerships between Africa and Europe.

Professor Maru serves at the Florence School of Transnational Governance, European University Institute, Migration Policy Centre, and as Academic Coordinator of the Young African Leaders Programme. The European University Institute is also an implementing partner of the Africa–Europe Youth Academy (AEYA), the flagship EU-funded initiative implemented by Agenzia Italiana per la Cooperazione allo Sviluppo and Expertise France in collaboration with leading academic institutions including University of Turin and University of Pavia.

Following the discussions, The Youth Café was formally designated as the official local partner for the October Local Youth Connecting Event alongside Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.

The programme will engage young people across 20 African countries, particularly women and those in vulnerable and marginalized contexts, creating pathways for leadership, civic engagement, innovation, and community-driven solutions while strengthening enduring bridges between Africa and Europe.
