Women are at the heart of Kenya's dairy sector, yet significant barriers continue to limit their access to finance, resources, and decision-making opportunities.
During the Women in Dairy Initiative side event at the World Farmers' Organisation (WFO) Annual Meeting 2026 in Nairobi, stakeholders examined the findings of the newly launched Women in Dairy Report by KENAFF, USDEC, and AfriCCLAN, which highlights both the contributions and challenges facing women dairy farmers.
The report reveals that women account for 86% of dairy cooperative membership in Kenya, yet 65% remain excluded from formal credit due to a lack of land ownership and traditional collateral requirements. Discussions focused on innovative financing solutions, including the recognition of livestock, milk delivery records, and other alternative assets as collateral to unlock greater opportunities for women farmers.
We were honored to hear from Ms. Krysta Harden, President and CEO of the U.S. Dairy Export Council, whose remarks underscored the importance of investing in women as leaders, entrepreneurs, and drivers of agricultural transformation.
Building resilient dairy systems requires ensuring that the women who sustain them have equal access to the tools, resources, and opportunities they need to thrive.
