Women are at the heart of Kenya's dairy sector, yet significant barriers continue to limit their access to finance, resources, and decision-making opportunities.

During the Women in Dairy Initiative side event at the World Farmers' Organisation (WFO) Annual Meeting 2026 in Nairobi, stakeholders examined the findings of the newly launched Women in Dairy Report by KENAFF, USDEC, and AfriCCLAN, which highlights both the contributions and challenges facing women dairy farmers.

The report reveals that women account for 86% of dairy cooperative membership in Kenya, yet 65% remain excluded from formal credit due to a lack of land ownership and traditional collateral requirements. Discussions focused on innovative financing solutions, including the recognition of livestock, milk delivery records, and other alternative assets as collateral to unlock greater opportunities for women farmers.

We were honored to hear from Ms. Krysta Harden, President and CEO of the U.S. Dairy Export Council, whose remarks underscored the importance of investing in women as leaders, entrepreneurs, and drivers of agricultural transformation.

Building resilient dairy systems requires ensuring that the women who sustain them have equal access to the tools, resources, and opportunities they need to thrive.

Highlighting the value of science-driven, farmer-led agriculture.

Alongside the exhibition and the broader proceedings of the World Farmers' Organization Annual Assembly 2026, a series of side events provided an important platform for deeper discussions on the issues shaping the future of agriculture.

Bringing together farmer leaders, researchers, policymakers, and development partners, these conversations explored practical solutions for building more resilient, productive, and sustainable food systems.

Among the key messages shared during the side events was the importance of ensuring that agricultural policies and decisions are informed by both scientific evidence and the practical knowledge of farmers.

As noted by KENAFF CEO Dr. Daniel Mwendah M'Mailutha:

"We are farmer-driven, yes, but we also want to be rooted in science. We want to be science-based, not opinion, but hard science, but obviously mitigated by the wisdom of the farmers."

His remarks underscored the importance of bridging research, innovation, and farmer experience to address the complex challenges facing agriculture today. Sustainable solutions are strongest when they combine scientific knowledge with the lived realities of farming communities.

The side events demonstrated the value of creating spaces where science, innovation, and farmer perspectives can come together to inform meaningful action and strengthen the future of agriculture.

As host of the Annual Assembly, KENAFF was proud to facilitate conversations that connected research, innovation, and farmer knowledge in pursuit of sustainable agricultural transformation.

Highlighting a call to action for the future of agriculture.

During the World Farmers' Organization Annual Assembly 2026, KENAFF National Chairperson Prof. Kaburu M'Ribu challenged delegates to move beyond dialogue and translate shared commitments into meaningful action.

His remarks emphasized the importance of strengthening partnerships among governments, financial institutions, and farmer organizations; increasing investment in smallholder farmers who feed much of the developing world; harnessing the potential of digital innovation and emerging technologies; and empowering women farmers whose contributions continue to be essential to agricultural development and food security.

As the global farming community gathered in Nairobi under the theme *Future Fields*, his message served as a timely reminder that lasting progress will require collaboration, investment, and inclusive leadership that places farmers at the centre of agricultural transformation.

KENAFF remains committed to championing farmer-led development, strengthening partnerships, and ensuring that the voices of farmers continue to shape the future of food systems both in Kenya and around the world.

2026 is the International Year of the Woman Farmer, celebrating the voice of women farmers in shaping the future of agriculture.

At the World Farmers' Organization Annual Assembly 2026, KENAFF was proud to be represented by a woman farmer, Madam Ebla Hassan whose presence reflected the vital role women continue to play in strengthening food systems, supporting rural livelihoods, and driving agricultural transformation.

Her contribution to the Assembly served as a reminder that farmers are not
merely participants in conversations about the future, they are helping to
lead them. Across Kenya and around the world, women farmers are demonstrating resilience, innovation, and leadership in the face of evolving challenges and
opportunities.

As we mark the Year of the Woman Farmer, we celebrate the countless women
whose dedication sustains families, communities, and economies, often while overcoming significant barriers to resources, opportunities, and recognition.

KENAFF remains committed to championing inclusive agricultural development and
ensuring that the voices of women farmers are heard, valued, and represented at every level of decision-making.

The future of agriculture is stronger when women farmers have a seat at the table.

Let's look back on a powerful message from the World Farmers' Organization Annual Assembly 2026.

In his address to the global farming community, Cabinet Secretary, Hon. Mutahi Kagwe, EGH , Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, reminded delegates that the future of humanity is inseparable from the future of agriculture. As the world grapples with climate change, food insecurity, and shifting economic realities, he called for renewed global cooperation that places farmers at the centre of sustainable development.

His remarks underscored a simple but profound truth: farmers are not merely producers of food, they are stewards of the land, custodians of our natural resources, and the foundation upon which resilient economies and societies are built.

As hosts of the Annual Assembly, KENAFF was honored to welcome farmer leaders and agricultural stakeholders from across the world to Nairobi. The discussions reaffirmed our shared commitment to strengthening farmer organizations, advancing farmer-led solutions, and ensuring that the voices of farmers remain at the heart of global conversations on food systems and sustainable development.

The future of agriculture will be shaped not by individual actions, but by collective purpose. Through dialogue, partnership, and shared vision, we can build food systems that are more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable for generations to come.
