DEFTEC GRADUATES THE 4TH COHORT OF CONSTRUCTION SKILLS AND PIONEER TVET ON WHEELS CLASS

The Defence Forces Technical College (DEFTEC) marked the 4th Cohort of Tufuzu Youth Construction Skills Development Course graduation ceremony presided by the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), General Charles Kahariri on 08 April 2026 at Embakasi Garrison. Celebrating a remarkable milestone in its efforts to empower and equip members of military families with vital technical skills.

The 4th Cohort is the pioneer of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) on wheels at the Defence Forces Technical College (DEFTEC), a college accredited to build skills, confidence, and careers. It was sponsored through a strategic partnership between the Military Wives Association of Kenya (MWAK), Family Bank through the Family Bank Foundation and supplemented by the Kenya Army reaffirming the expanding role of community and corporate support in strengthening the broader Defence ecosystem.

The 89 graduands drawn from various Kenya Defence Forces families successfully completed an intensive three-month technical training in plumbing and electrical installation, designed to enhance employability, self-reliance and long-term socio-economic stability within military communities. Their achievement reflects DEFTEC’s evolving mandate to extend technical empowerment beyond uniformed personnel to the wider KDF family.

General Charles Kahariri, while delivering his address, emphasized that the graduation of the Tufuzu Youth Construction Skills cohort represents a strategic investment in the strength and resilience of military families. He commended the strong partnership between the MWAK and the Family Bank Foundation noting that such collaborations reinforce the welfare backbone that supports the Kenya Defence Forces.

The CDF proclaimed that time has come for upscaling the current training and requested all stake holders including MWAK, Family Group Foundation and DEFTEC to come up with infrastructure to start TVET in KDF which will help in sustainability of the training and add more courses to support a good gender balance. He also highlighted that the graduands will be engaged in KDF ongoing projects and additionally they will be recruited into the KDF.

Similarly, the Chairperson of MWAK Mrs. Grace Kahariri applauded the graduands for their perseverance and commitment throughout the training period. She emphasized MWAK’s dedication to uplifting military families through education, welfare support and opportunities that foster both personal growth and community resilience. Mrs. Kahariri highlighted that providing technical training to dependants not only honours the sacrifices of service members but also strengthens the social fabric that supports the Defence Forces.

On the same platform, the Founder of the Family Bank Limited Mr. Titus Muya pointed out new responsibilities of the graduands, adding that the graduation marks a significant milestone not only in their lives, but in the legacy, they will pass on to future generations.

In a display of professionalism, the graduands equally, showcased their technical proficiency in plumbing and electrical installation across a range of residential house plans. The graduands provided in-depth explanations of their designs and practical applications, demonstrating the high level of skill and training attained through the Tufuzu Youth Construction Skills Development Training.

The Director of the Kenya Institute of Special Education Dr. Norman Kiogora, appreciated the initiative, applauding the Kenya Defence Forces for being the lead in advancing inclusivity in special needs education.

Also, during the event, Mr. Daniel Ndambuki, popularly known as Churchill, urged the graduands to trust themselves and believe in their abilities as they begin their next chapter. He encouraged them to build strong personal brands, noting that once a person becomes a brand, opportunities and financial growth naturally follow.

The event culminated with awarding of certificates and construction toolkits to the graduands as they transit to the internship phase.

Also present during the event were the Commander Kenya Army, Lieutenant General David Ketter, the General Officer Commanding Eastern Command Major General Luka Kutto, Dr Francis Muraya, the board Chair of the Family Group Foundation, the CEO Family Bank Ms. Nancy Njau, MWAK Executive Committee Members, Senior Officers, Officers, Service Members and Military families.

PROMOTING AUTISM AWARENESS AND INCLUSION

Military Wives Association of Kenya (MWAK), in collaboration with Kenya Navy and the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE), joined the global community on 02 April 2026 to commemorate World Autism Awareness Day at the Kenya Navy Base (KNB) Mtongwe in Mombasa County.

The event, held under the theme “Autism and Humanity: Every Life Has Value,” sought to highlight the dignity of individuals living with autism, promote understanding of their unique needs and advocate for the creation of inclusive, neurodiverse friendly environments within society.

The day’s activities began with a courtesy call by the MWAK delegation, led by Chairlady Mrs Grace Kahariri, to Commander Kenya Navy, Major General Paul Otieno, at the Kenya Navy Headquarters. This was followed by an awareness procession around the KNB Mtongwe, bringing together naval personnel and their families in a show of solidarity and support.

A key highlight of the event was an informative session conducted by specialists from The Kenya Navy Hospital (TKNH). These included health talks focusing on prenatal care, proper nutrition and the importance of psychosocial support for families raising children with autism.

In her address, Mrs Kahariri emphasized the importance of inclusion and societal transformation in supporting individuals with autism. She called on stakeholders to create sensory friendly spaces, adopt flexible employment practices and ensure access to quality inclusive education.

"Our goal must be active inclusion. This means creating sensory friendly environments, adopting flexibility hiring practices and providing quality, inclusive education. Let us pledge today to build a future where every autistic person can thrive, not just survive. Let us transform the world into a place where difference is not only tolerated but celebrated. Let’s light up the world with understanding, not just for one day in April but every day," she said.

She added that plans are underway to have a classroom and therapy room for autistic children in every KDF sponsored school in the country.

Deputy Commander Kenya Navy, Brigadier General Sankale Kiswaa, reaffirmed the Kenya Defence Forces’ commitment to the welfare of its personnel and their families, noting that strong family support systems directly enhance operational readiness. He further noted that autism should not be viewed as an inability but rather as a unique way of thinking and interacting with the environment.

"The Kenya Defence Forces is founded on strong principles of duty, solidarity and service to the nation. These principles extends beyond operational responsibilities to encompass the welfare of our personnel and their families, We recognize that behind every uniformed officer and service member is a family whose well being directly contributes to the overall strength and readiness of the force," said Brigadier General Kiswaa.

Dr. Norman Kiogora, Director of KISE, echoed these sentiments, urging society to eliminate stigma and foster environment where every individual can achieve their full potential.

"As we mark this day, let us build a society where every person is valued, every family is supported and every individual has the opportunity to reach their full potential. Let us end stigma and commit to being an inclusive society. True humanity is measured not by our words but by our actions, " said Dr Kiogora.

Adding a personal perspective, Madam Ancillar Mazia, a parent of a child living with autism, encouraged fellow parents and caregivers to embrace early diagnosis and seek professional guidance, underscoring the positive impact of timely intervention.

The event concluded on a heartwarming note, with the children receiving assorted gifts, symbolizing care, appreciation and the community’s commitment to their well-being.

This year's commemoration served as a powerful reminder that inclusion, compassion and awareness are collective responsibilities. Through continued advocacy, education and support, MWAK and the Kenya Defence Forces are paving the way for a more inclusive society where every individual, regardless of ability, is given the opportunity to thrive and contribute meaningfully.
