TI-Kenya, together with members of the Okoa Uchumi Campaign Coalition has today raised serious concerns over the proposed FY 2026/27 budget and the Draft Finance Bill 2026, warning that the country is heading toward deeper economic distress driven by excessive borrowing, punitive taxation, and systemic corruption.

The Coalition notes that while Kenyans continue to struggle with the rising cost of living, failing healthcare services, delayed education funding, and growing unemployment, the government has tabled a KSh 4.82 trillion budget heavily dependent on borrowing and aggressive tax collection measures.

Among the key concerns raised are:
• Expanding surveillance and account-freezing powers for KRA
• Increased pressure on ordinary taxpayers while protecting elite interests
• The continued fuel and SHA corruption scandals
• Rising electricity and fuel costs
• Threats to digital inclusion through increased excise duty on mobile phones
• The growing burden of public debt on future generations

The Coalition is calling on Parliament to:
✔ Delete intrusive and discriminatory clauses in the Finance Bill 2026
✔ Scale down the proposed budget to realistic revenue levels
✔ Hold fuel and health cartels accountable
✔ Protect citizens from economic oppression and punitive taxation
✔ Safeguard constitutional rights and democratic freedoms

TI-Kenya, together with the members of the Police Reforms Working Group and the Law Society of Kenya, condemn the arbitrary arrest, detention and hospitalization of Nairobi Central Station Police Commander, Chief Inspector Dishen Angoya, following his lawful decision to release sixty-four protesters on police bond yesterday.

The power to grant police bond is grounded in Kenya's legal and constitutional framework. Criminalising the exercise of this discretion undermines the rule of law. It chills professional judgment within the police service and signals unlawful interference in operational independence.

Reports that the arrest was carried out on "orders from above" heighten concerns about politicised policing and command

We, as TI-Kenya and the National Integrity Alliance, are deeply concerned and disappointed following the decision by the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court made on 15th May 2026 to uphold the plea bargain agreement entered into between the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) and former Migori Governor Okoth Obado, alongside his co-accused persons in the Ksh. 73.4 million corruption case.

TI-Kenya recently launched the GESI research in Nandi and Mombasa counties. The study assessed the impact of corruption on the marginalized groups; women and persons living with disabilities.

These infographics were developed to distill the research findings and present a clear comparative analysis of corruption trends in Nandi and Mombasa counties.

This study calls for inclusive governance, stronger accountability systems, and accessible corruption reporting mechanisms to protect marginalized communities.

Tl Kenya, in partnership with Africa Young Parliamentarians Network (AYPN) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), convened a Regional Parliamentary Dialogue on Political Party and Campaign Financing Transparency in Cape Town, South Africa from the 4th till 7th of May 2026.

This workshop brought together young parliamentarians alongside civil society actors, oversight institutions, and technical experts in an inclusive, multi-stakeholder dialogue grounded in practical realities and diverse perspectives.

Through shared experiences and data from TI-Kenya and partner institutions, participants deepened their understanding of corruption risks, including illicit financial flows linked to political financing. The engagement also strengthened awareness of international frameworks such as United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) and Africa Union Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption (AUCPCC), while highlighting best practices for regulating political party and campaign financing.

TI-Kenya further shared insights from Kenya and across the East African region, highlighting the strong link between weak political finance transparency and increased corruption. This presentation pointed out existing gaps in Sub-Saharan Africa in implementing commitments under UNCAC and AUCPCC, particularly in areas such as political financing transparency, access to information, whistleblower protection, beneficial ownership, and asset recovery all of which are critical in strengthening accountability systems and curbing illicit financial flows.

In addition, this dialogue culminated in the development of regional recommendations aimed at advancing transparency and accountability in political finance. AYPN continues to play a key role as a pan-African platform empowering young legislators to collaborate, build capacity, and champion governance reforms across the continent.
