SPOTLIGHT Meet Austine — a compassionate leader and pure example of Jacaranda’s impact!

Austine grew up receiving the benefits of child sponsorship through Jacaranda and now faithfully gives back by serving alongside those who once invested in him. His story is a powerful reminder of how education, community, and love can change a life for generations to come.

Share with us about your family:
“I come from a family of five—my mum Judy, my two sisters Laureen and Diana, and my cousin whom my mum took in when he was small. He is like a brother to me now. My father passed away when I was 12 years old. I originally went to church because it was the closest one to where we lived. Later, a friend encouraged me to come with him to Jacaranda because of the food they used to serve. Food was what held our friendship together because where we came from, we often did not have enough to eat. My friend would even steal bread from a shop so we could share food together at school.”

Why is children’s education important in Kenya?
“I think education is important because it prepares children to engage in socio-political, economic, and spiritual matters for the expansion of the Kingdom of God.”

Can you share some memories from your schooling?
“I have many memories from my early school days. Most are difficult because I struggled with low self-esteem, and some painful memories are hard to remember. But I do remember the good friends who stood by me during those dark seasons of life. Home was not very peaceful at the time, and it affected both my studies and my relationships with others. Good teachers became my safe space and support system.”

What is important to you to have in a school?
“I would want schools to focus on mental health and the well-being of students. Many schools focus only on teaching but not on nurturing students emotionally and mentally, and I believe that is just as important.”

**SPOTLIGHT** Meet Judy — a resilient, faith-filled, and compassionate leader at Jacaranda!

Judy is an integral part of the Jacaranda team! She oversees the child sponsorship arm of Jacaranda Ministries, ensuring sponsored children are attending school and receiving regular school and home visits. She also manages the waiting list, connecting sponsors with children most in need.

Share with us about your family and upbringing:
“I was born into a family of eight siblings, but I became an orphan at the age of eight. We were separated and taken in by different families, friends, and church members. Life was very hard, and I lost hope. I grew up carrying much bitterness and pain from abusive environments. My schooling was difficult because it was often interrupted by the need to work, but despite the challenges, I was able to finish school. I later married and had three beautiful children. In 2007, during the election violence, my husband was killed in tribal clashes, leaving me widowed with my three children and my nephew who has special needs.”

Why is children’s education important in Kenya?
“Education is important because it gives boys and girls the opportunity to rise above poverty and build a better future for their families, communities, and country. I also believe education helps promote strong moral values. When I was young, I went to school barefoot, without a school bag or proper uniform. I walked many kilometers to get there, and it was a very difficult experience. I do not want children to have to suffer in order to receive an education.”

What is important to you to have in a school?
“I would love a school with ample space, a playground, and spacious classrooms that create a conducive environment for learning.”
