ArtBeat: Where Creativity Inspires Change

ArtBeat is more than a performing arts event, it's a safe space where young people use creativity to unpack complex issues, share their lived experiences, and inspire positive action.

Through visual and performing arts, young people engage in meaningful conversations about drug and substance use, mental wellbeing, peer pressure, and making healthy life choices. Every performance becomes a powerful message of hope, resilience, and prevention.

By transforming art into advocacy, ArtBeat empowers youth to challenge harmful norms, amplify their voices, and lead their peers toward healthier, drug-free communities.
Art has the power to start conversations. Youth have the power to transform communities.

SCAD Kenya was proud to host the Annual SCAD Day at Limuru Girls High School under the theme "Victory Against Drugs."

The event brought together passionate SCAD Club members to strengthen their knowledge, leadership, and commitment to preventing drug and substance use within their schools and communities. Through interactive learning, peer engagement, and leadership development, students were empowered to become champions of prevention and positive change.

One of the highlights of the day was the students' powerful use of artistic expression to advocate against substance use. Their creativity demonstrated that young people are among the strongest voices for prevention.

We are building a generation of informed, resilient, and empowered young leaders who are choosing healthy lifestyles and inspiring their peers to do the same.

Over the past weeks, SCAD proudly partnered with Alcoholic Drinks Control and Licensing Board and Social Services Department to conduct drug and substance use sensitization sessions across vocational training colleges in Nairobi.

Through interactive discussions, peer engagement, and practical learning, we reached hundreds of young people with critical information on substance use, addiction, risk and protective factors, mental health, and healthy decision-making.

Vocational training institutions are home to ambitious young people building skills for their future. By investing in prevention, awareness, and life skills, we are helping create environments where young people can thrive, make informed choices, and pursue their goals free from the harms of drugs and substance use.

From TikTok trends to sweet-flavoured products, to***co and ni****ne marketing is increasingly designed to attract young users. What is presented online as modern, fashionable, and socially acceptable is often a carefully crafted strategy to normalize addiction among young people.

To***co and ni****ne products are heavily marketed to appear harmless and appealing, yet these products are highly addictive and expose users to serious health risks, including heart disease, cancer, and respiratory illnesses.

Young people deserve protection from manipulative marketing tactics that disguise addiction as lifestyle and entertainment. Stronger action is needed to protect children and adolescents from online exposure and easy access to harmful products.

We call for full enforcement of laws banning to***co advertising, promotion, and sponsorship, as well as stronger regulation to prohibit online marketing, sales, and delivery of to***co and ni****ne products.

“The to***co industry fears one thing: higher prices.”

Increasing to***co taxes is one of the most effective ways to reduce smoking and protect public health, especially among young people who are most sensitive to price increases.

Evidence shows that a 30% annual increase in to***co taxes in Kenya would reduce smoking prevalence by 12% and help avert more than 62,540 premature deaths.

When to***co products become less affordable, fewer young people start using them, more users quit, and lives are saved.

It’s time to prioritize health over industry profits. Call on the National Treasury to increase to***co excise taxes by 30% annually to reduce affordability and protect future generations from addiction and disease.

New users keep the to***co and ni****ne industry alive — and many young people are being drawn in before they fully understand the consequences.

In Kenya, 2.5% of adolescents currently use to***co or ni****ne products. Behind the appealing flavours, trendy packaging, and social media influence is an industry that depends on recruiting younger users to sustain its growth.

What may look harmless or “normal” online can quickly become addiction. Young people deserve protection from manipulative marketing tactics designed to hook a new generation.

Speak up about how youth are being targeted. Support stronger protections, stronger policies, and healthier environments for children and adolescents.

Vijana wanastahili ukweli, sio udanganyifu.

As we continue the countdown to World No To***co Day 2026, the Ministry of Health, together with civil society organizations, is leading sensitization activities to strengthen awareness on the dangers of to***co, ni****ne, and substance use among young people.

Today’s engagement at Peter Kariuki Secondary School in Murang’a focused on teacher sensitization on drugs and substance abuse, recognizing the important role educators play in prevention, mentorship, and protecting learners from harmful influences.

Equipping teachers with the right knowledge helps build safer school environments, strengthen early intervention, and support healthier futures for young people. Preventing addiction begins with informed communities and empowered educators.

Ni****ne advertising has become so common online that many young people no longer recognize it as manipulation.

In Kenya, 4 in 10 adolescents regularly encounter ni****ne products on their screens. The danger is not only the product itself, but the illusion that “everyone is doing it.”

The to***co and ni****ne industry thrives when addiction looks normal, entertaining, and socially acceptable. Young people deserve digital spaces that protect their health instead of promoting addiction through algorithms and targeted content.

Don’t scroll past manipulation. When you see ni****ne content disguised as entertainment or lifestyle culture, call it out. Challenge the normalization. Break the silence. Help expose the tactics behind the trend.

Join the conversation.

Flavours are not harmless, they are designed to make ni****ne products more appealing, especially to young people.

Flavoured to***co and ni****ne products increase the likelihood of youth initiation and addiction. In Kenya:

📌 49% of people who use ni****ne pouches say they use them because of the flavours.
📌 68% of e-cigarette users say they use them because the products come in flavours they like.

Behind the sweet flavours and trendy packaging is a strategy to attract and retain young users. Protecting young people means addressing the appeal of flavoured ni****ne products before addiction takes hold.
