The German Civil Peace Service (CPS) supports projects aimed at non-violent conflict resolutions in various countries worldwide. Its objectives are the prevention of violent conflicts, the reduction of violence, and the long-term securing of peace. Therefore, a number of development and peace organisations have joined up to form the Civil Peace Service Consortium. The programme is being founded by
the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). Building bridges, supporting dialogue and mediation, dealing with the past to enable reconciliation are key elements of the Civil Peace Service in Kenya for the last seven years, as the post-election violence in 2007/ 08 was the entry point for the engagement in Kenya. In Kenya, CPS projects are implemented by three organisations:
• German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ)
• Peace Brigades International (PBI)
• Association for Development Cooperation (AGEH)
The Civil Peace Service can moreover be successful through Kenyan partners, institutions and stakeholders, like Peace and Development Network Trust Kenya (PeaceNet), Kituo Cha Sheria, Haki Yetu Organisation; Catholic Justice and Peace Commission (CJPC); Ecumenical Center Justice and Peace (ECJP), Coast Inter-faith Council of Clerics (CICC) and others. They strengthen their capacity in providing space for dialogue processes, conflict sensitive programming, community driven non-violent conflict transformation processes encouraging them to openly deal with their past.
