🌍 World Environment Day 2026
Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.

Nature has always shown us the way. Healthy soils, thriving ecosystems, and resilient landscapes are some of our strongest allies in tackling climate change and securing our future.

This World Environment Day, we celebrate the power of regenerative agriculture; farming practices that restore soil health, enhance biodiversity, improve water retention, and strengthen the resilience of farming communities.

By working with nature rather than against it, regenerative agriculture helps create productive food systems while protecting the environment for generations to come.

Through initiatives such as the Project, farmers and stakeholders are gaining the knowledge and skills needed to adopt sustainable land management practices that regenerate ecosystems, improve livelihoods, and contribute to climate action.

The future of our planet depends on the actions we take today. Whether you are a farmer, researcher, policymaker, or consumer, you have a role to play in supporting practices that restore the land and build climate resilience.

🌱 Let's be inspired by nature and take action for our climate and our future.

Today, we honor the courage, unity, and resilience that led Kenya to self-governance. Madaraka Day is a celebration of our continued journey toward freedom, dignity, and development.

As we raise our fists in pride and gratitude, we remember that true independence is lived out daily through better nutrition, innovation, and unity.

From all of us at FSPN Africa, we wish you a reflective and empowering Madaraka Day.

Harvest day at the Nairobi Living Lab! 🌾

The CRAM upland rice varieties (ARICA lines) at KALRO FCRC Kabete have now been harvested under the HealthyDiets4Africa Project—showing encouraging performance and exciting potential for Kenya’s food systems.

The activity was carried out through the collaborative efforts of FSPN Africa, led by Dr. Angeline Maina, together with the KALRO team led by Esther Muriuki, Food Security Policy and Management Expert.

During the exercise, the team also collected important agronomic data such as:
🌱 Plant height per hill
🌱 Number of tillers per hill
🌱 Growth performance observations

These assessments will help determine how well the CRAM rice varieties can adapt and perform in Kenyan conditions.

The results continue to show that farmers do not necessarily need traditional lowland paddy systems to explore rice production. Upland rice varieties like CRAM could help increase food production, diversify diets, and improve resilience against climate challenges.

A heartfelt thank you to KALRO FCRC Kabete for the continued support and partnership in making the Living Lab a space where research meets practical impact. 🌍💚

This is more than rice—it’s proof that innovation can change how we think about farming. 🌾

The CRAM upland rice varieties (ARICA lines) at the Kenyan Living Lab in KALRO Kabete are now mature and ready for harvesting under the HealthyDiets4Africa Project.

From the photos, you can clearly see strong grain development, healthy panicles, and encouraging crop performance—showing the real potential of these climate-smart varieties.

And here’s the exciting part: you no longer need to depend only on traditional lowland paddies to think about rice production. With upland rice innovations like CRAM, farmers can explore rice cultivation in suitable upland farming systems, opening new possibilities for production and resilience.

Why this matters for farmers and communities:
✅ More options for climate-resilient farming
✅ Reduced pressure on traditional paddy-based systems
✅ Increased local rice production to strengthen food security
✅ New income opportunities for smallholder farmers
✅ Diversified diets through nutritious rice-based foods
✅ Research-backed innovations that can transform livelihoods

A huge appreciation to the Africa Rice Center (AfricaRice) for breeding and supplying these seeds, and to KALRO FCRC Kabete for providing a Living Lab where innovation is being tested and demonstrated.

This is how partnerships turn science into impact. 🌍🌱

At the heart of our work, Technology and Innovations are central tools in our impact creation across the food systems. In this mission, the Community Virtual Hub (CVH.Africa), an inclusive digital platform, is designed to empower youth, women, farmers, agripreneurs, researchers, and food system actors through self-paced e-learning, expert-led training, mentorship, and knowledge exchange.

CVH.Africa currently supports learning in areas such as sustainable agriculture, aquaculture, food safety, agribusiness development, climate-smart farming, insect farming, spirulina production, nutrition, and entrepreneurship. The platform has become a key digital empowerment tool within EU-funded initiatives, including the INNOECOFOOD and HealthyDiets4Africa projects.

Swipe through the journey of innovation in action! 🌾✨

From the early growth stages in December 2025 to visible panicles and grains in April 2026, the upland CRAM rice varieties (ARICA 14) at the Kenyan Living Lab in KALRO Kabete are making exciting progress under the HealthyDiets4Africa Project.

These rice varieties, bred by the Africa Rice Center (AfricaRice), are more than just crops—they are climate-smart solutions for farmers. With benefits such as drought tolerance, high yield potential, early maturity, and disease resistance, CRAM rice can help farmers improve productivity while adapting to changing climate conditions.

At the same time, the varieties contribute to diet diversification and healthier food systems, opening opportunities for new nutritious food products across Africa.

A big thank you to AfricaRice and all partners supporting innovation through research, collaboration, and Living Labs. 🌍💚
