(1)

Established in 1988, The Centre for the Study of Adolescence (CSA) is an independent, non-partisan, non-profit organization, which both creates and promotes a coordinated approach to understanding and managing adolescent health and related issues in Kenya through research and advocacy. The centre, governed by a board of seven directors, has three offices in Kenya, including the headquarters in Nai

robi and field offices in Kisumu and Bungoma. CSA also has field staff located in Mombassa. Today, CSA is implementing sexuality education programs in over 200 schools, in five provinces of Kenya, reaching over 10,000 students annually. CSA works with partner organizations in all programs and since 2007, has worked with civil society organizations (CSOs) as well as local citizen based organizations (CBOs) in order to reach the most vulnerable young people, including those no longer attending school with reproductive health and family planning programs.

CSA proudly celebrated the graduation of the 2nd cohort of the SHE SOARS Project in Kisumu and Bondo, marking the successful completion of a 2-year journey through the SHE SOARS SRHR curriculum.

📍 Kisumu County - 28th April 2026
📍 Bondo Subcounty - 29th April 2026

The graduation ceremonies brought together the CARE Kenya team, government representatives, health officials, community leaders, caregivers, partner organizations, and other stakeholders committed to promoting adolescent wellbeing and positive social norms.

Through the project, participants strengthened their agency, built social assets, increased their SRHR knowledge, and explored pathways toward financial autonomy through Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) and peer support networks.

Several graduates also committed to becoming SRHR champions within their communities, continuing to advocate for healthy relationships, gender equality, and youth empowerment.

One of the most inspiring moments came from a caregiver testimony sharing how Social Analysis and Action (SAA) sessions and Intergenerational Dialogues (IGD) contributed to positive changes within households, including more equitable sharing of domestic responsibilities among boys and girls.

Here’s to empowered youth, transformed communities, and brighter futures ahead!

As part of efforts to promote child rights awareness in Likuyani Sub-county, the Thriving Childhoods Project, implemented by CSA with support from Kindernotehilfe (KNH), supported the painting of wall murals in selected schools.

The murals reinforce key messages on child rights and protection, creating visible and engaging reminders for learners, teachers, and the wider school community. This initiative contributes to building safer, more informed environments where children are aware of their rights and the importance of their protection.

On 23rd April 2026, we brought together key child protection actors in Likuyani Subcounty for a joint training on the rights of child survivors of sexual violence.

From health providers and police officers to chiefs and child protection volunteers, the session focused on strengthening how duty bearers respond to defilement cases, ensuring timely action, proper documentation, and trauma-informed care for survivors.

The training was shaped by insights from a recent Children Advisory Committee (CAC) meeting, which highlighted the need for stronger coordination between health and law enforcement.

Together, we’re strengthening systems that put children first, ensuring every response is coordinated, compassionate, and survivor-centered.

From 20-24 April 2026, CSA participated in Kenya’s 4th Cycle Universal Periodic Review (UPR) National Stakeholders’ Workshop, in partnership with EACHRights, the State Department for Justice, Human Rights and Constitutional Affairs (SDOJ), the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), Lutheran World Federation (LWF), Kenya Legal and Ethical Issues Network on HIV and AIDS (KELIN), MSI Reproductive Choices, GEM Trust, the Independent Medico-Legal Unit (IMLU), and other partners across government and civil society.

The five-day convening brought together Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), constitutional commissions, independent offices, civil society organizations, and development partners to review and validate two key national frameworks: the UPR Implementation Matrix and the National Human Rights Policy and Action Plan.

Across technical presentations, thematic breakout sessions, and plenary discussions, participants worked to:
• Refine and prioritize UPR recommendations
• Strengthen coordination and accountability across institutions and MDAs
• Clarify implementation roles for duty bearers
• Enhance monitoring, financing, and reporting systems for human rights commitments

The engagement reinforced the importance of coordinated, multi-sectoral action in advancing human rights implementation in Kenya.

For CSA, this process created a key opportunity to engage directly with MDAs and national human rights institutions, strengthening collaboration on SRHR within formal state-led accountability and policy implementation frameworks.

Over two days, CSA brought together 28 Youth SRHR Advocacy Champions (YACs) under the Investing in Young People: Transforming SRHR initiative to strengthen their skills in advocacy research, fundraising, and sustainability.

Through interactive sessions, they learned to:
✨ Generate evidence on issues affecting young people
✨ Turn research into powerful advocacy messages
✨ Build strategies to sustain youth-led initiatives
✨ Learn, connect, and collaborate

This work contributes to a broader regional movement, linking young advocates across Uganda, Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe, amplifying youth voices where it matters most.

When young people are equipped and connected, they don’t just participate, they lead change.

Over three impactful days in Ndhiwa Subcounty, CSA brought peer educators together under the SASSI Project for an intensive learning experience focused on mental health, psychosocial support, and sexual and reproductive health and rights.

Through practical sessions on Psychological First Aid anchored in: “Look, Listen, Link”, as well as SGBV response and referral pathways, participants strengthened their ability to support peers navigating complex challenges, from social pressures and family conflict to limited access to care.

Beyond skills, the training fostered confidence, leadership, and a shared commitment to breaking stigma, promoting awareness, and connecting young people to safe, youth-friendly services.

The ripple effect? Healthier, informed, and empowered communities led by young people themselves.

In Kisumu County, CSA recently convened key stakeholders to reflect on progress in advancing SRHR through safe spaces, community dialogues, and accountability processes.

A standout moment: A SHE SOARS project beneficiary shared how the program is helping her step into her confidence and make informed choices about her future.

NIGEE – one of the partner organizations, also emphasized the project’s role in empowering adolescent girls and young women through mentorship and SRHR education.

Together, we’re committing to scale up safe spaces, strengthen community-health linkages, and ensure no one is left behind - especially marginalized groups and persons with disabilities.

The CSA team in Kisumu had an opportunity to participate in the IWD celebrations at Mama Grace Onyango Social Hall.

It was more than just a commemoration; it was a deep dive into the real barriers facing women and youth in Kisumu County. From the underrepresentation of women in leadership post-2022 elections, to the cultural shifts needed for true political participation, the dialogue was as urgent as ever.

Key highlights from the forum:

Economic Resilience: Exploring how SACCOs, the Youth Fund, and the Nyota Project are fueling startups and financial independence.

Systemic Change: Addressing GBV by strengthening legal and community support systems to ensure safety for all.

Leadership: Encouraging women and youth to confidently step into decision-making roles.

We aren't just celebrating IWD for a day, we are committed to the sustained work of gender equality and youth empowerment every single day of the year.
