Did you know?
The early years of life, from birth to age 8 are critical in shaping a child’s future.
During this period, a child’s brain develops rapidly, laying the foundation for physical, emotional, cognitive, and social growth. What happens in these early years has a lasting impact on learning, health, and overall well-being.

Yet, millions of children do not receive the care, nutrition, and stimulation they need to thrive. According to UNICEF, over 250 million children under the age of five in low- and middle-income countries are at risk of not reaching their developmental potential due to poverty, malnutrition, and limited early learning opportunities.

What makes the difference?
✔ Responsive and nurturing caregiving
✔ Quality early learning
✔ Access to health and nutrition services

At Investing in Children and their Societies (ICS-SP), we work with families, caregivers, communities, and partners to strengthen early childhood development and ensure that children especially those in vulnerable circumstances get the best possible start in life.
Investing in Early Childhood Development (ECD) is one of the most powerful investments we can make for children today and for stronger, healthier societies tomorrow.

This week at ICS-SP, we’ve been strengthening partnerships, building capacity, and amplifying our voice to create safe, nurturing environments for children and families.

Under our Malezi Mema Jamii Imara Project, we are concluding an intensive 8-day Training of Trainers (ToT) for the Alternative Family Care Unit of the State Department for Children Services. With the mandate to implement the Family Promotion and Protection Policy now transferred to the new State Department, this skills transfer is essential.

By equipping their leadership with the right knowledge and tools, we are supporting effective guidance and nationwide implementation of family-based care interventions.

In parallel, our Child Domestic Work (CDW) project team continued its inception meetings, engaging this week with NGAO leadership in Chakol Division, Teso South Sub-County. The session brought together the Assistant County Commissioner, Chiefs, and Assistant Chiefs for an introductory briefing on the CDW project and a strategic dialogue to secure leadership buy-in. We are encouraged by their strong commitment to supporting the rollout of CDW interventions across the sub-county.
As we culminate the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, our Kuimarisha Project team took part in a live discussion on Lubao FM, raising awareness on the protection and empowerment of adolescent mothers, caregivers, and communities. This conversation highlighted the urgent need to end all forms of violence and promote safer spaces for women, girls, and all children.

ICS-SP is committed to championing family-based care, strengthening community systems, and creating environments where every child thrives.

Did you know that nearly 1 in 3 women globally experience violence in their lifetime?

As our lives increasingly shift online, the digital world has become a new frontline where harmful behaviors, including cyberbullying, online harassment, non-consensual sharing of images, misinformation targeting women, and other forms of technology-facilitated abuse are growing in scale and complexity.
According to UN Women (Facts & Figures: Ending Violence Against Women), this global statistic reflects one of the most widespread human-rights violations.

As we continue the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence under the theme “UNiTE to End Digital Violence Against All Women and Girls,” we are reminded that digital safety is no longer optional it is essential.
A safe digital space for women and girls is one where:

✨ Online participation does not come with fear of abuse

✨ Privacy is respected and protected

✨ Platforms respond swiftly and firmly to harassment

✨ Women’s voices are amplified, not silenced

✨ Everyone, especially communities and institutions, is accountable for creating respectful online environments.

Let us champion digital spaces that uplift, protect, and empower every woman and girl.

This week, the march against Gender-Based Violence brought together Investing in Children and their Societies (ICS SP), partner organisations, and county government, and the global landscape, to mark the 16 Days of Activism, running from 25 November to 10 December 2025.
This year’s campaign, themed “UNiTE to End Digital Violence Against All Women and Girls,” highlights one of the fastest-growing forms of abuse and reminds us that digital safety is central to achieving gender equality. Violence against women and girls affects one in three women globally, and prevention requires coordinated action across communities, institutions, and online spaces.

At Investing in Children and their Societies (ICS SP), we continue to implement community-led, gender-transformative programs that tackle the root causes of violence, harmful social and gender norms, inequality, silence, and stigma while ensuring survivors access timely, compassionate, and trauma-informed support.

Together, we stand united to create safer digital and physical spaces for women and girls of all ages.

Through our Malezi Mema Jamii Imara project implemented in partnership with the government and UNICEF, families in Wajir, Turkana, and Garissa are experiencing a progressive and deeply positive shift in how they raise and relate with their children.
Graduating from the Positive Parenting training has become more than completing a programme; it marks the beginning of a new, healthier family culture that continues to strengthen over time.

A Progressive Positive Trend in Families
💛 Parents are becoming more emotionally present.
Caregivers are discovering that love, positive communication, and small daily routines rebuild trust and connection.
🌿 Families are steadily moving away from fear-based discipline.
Harsh punishments are giving way to calmer, teaching-focused guidance.
🧘‍♀️ Caregivers are prioritizing their well-being.
Parents are learning to pause, breathe, and respond thoughtfully, understanding that self-care improves their parenting.
⚖️ Gender roles at home are gradually shifting.
Shared responsibilities are becoming more normal, and children both boys and girls are receiving equal attention and care.
💬 Home conversations are growing more open and respectful.
Families are talking more about school, safety, emotions, and daily concerns, strengthening mutual trust.
🛑 Harmful norms continue to be challenged.
Communities are increasingly rejecting old beliefs that justified domestic violence, silence, or favoritism, choosing respect instead.
♿ Inclusion is becoming a family value.
Parents are more intentional about involving children with disabilities in everyday activities and decisions.

Graduated parents and caregivers are now becoming advocates for positive change, sharing lessons with neighbors and inspiring more families to join the journey.
This is a personal victory, a family victory, and ultimately, a community victory one that keeps growing.

Evidence shows that children respond best to praise and love — not fear.

At Investing in Children and their Societies (ICS SP), through our Skillful Parenting training, we encourage parents and caregivers to adopt positive affirmations that build a child’s confidence and sense of belonging.

A simple “I’m proud of you” can transform self-doubt into courage.

👍 Praise builds connection.
👍 Love builds character.
By applying positive communication techniques — such as giving compliments, using encouraging language, and practicing positive discipline — families can create nurturing home environments where every child feels valued and supported.

Did you know? ⛔
The values practiced within a family form the foundation for how children learn, grow, and behave.
Positive discipline plays a key role in nurturing this growth. It helps build a loving, trusting, and mutually respectful relationship between parents and their children.

Positive discipline is about teaching with consistency and care helping children understand what is expected of them and why rules exist. Through this approach, children learn to manage their behavior, make thoughtful choices, and act with purpose rather than impulse.
Remember, positive discipline is not about beating or scolding. It’s about guiding children with love, patience, and open communication.
Which negative disciplining strategies are you currently unlearning as you embrace positive discipline in your home?

Did you know that 15% of girls aged 15–19 in Kenya have had a child or are currently pregnant, and nearly half of these pregnancies are unintended?

In Kakamega County, many adolescent mothers face stigma, emotional distress, and limited access to education and health services, putting both them and their children at risk of poor mental health and developmental outcomes.

Today, 10th November 2025, Investing in Children and their Societies (ICS SP), in partnership with the County Government of Kakamega, is hosting a Mental Health Dialogue Day under the Kuimarisha Project. This initiative seeks to raise awareness, strengthen support systems, and promote mental wellness among adolescent parents, empowering them to care for themselves and their young children.

Together, we aim to inspire collective action, foster equitable caregiving, and integrate mental health support into community structures so that every adolescent parent and child can thrive in a supportive and nurturing environment.
Let’s work together to promote mental well-being and create communities where every young parent and child can thrive.

🌍 1 Day to Go!
We’re counting down to the 3rd International Conference on Child Protection (ICCP 2025), taking place from 5th – 7th November at the Kenya School of Government, Nairobi!

One of our featured presentations was compiled by Beatrice Nyakwaka Ogutu, Executive Director, and Macrine Otuge, Project Coordinator – Ending Exploitative Child Domestic Work, at Investing in Children and their Societies (ICS SP)
Their abstract, “Strengthening Child Protection in the Face of Climate Change: Addressing and Preventing Child Domestic Work in Kisumu County,” highlights how climate stressors increase children’s vulnerability and outlines steps to prevent exploitation and promote resilience.

As we join over 20 partners at 2025 under the theme “Child Protection and Climate Change,” we’re reminded that lasting change is only possible through collaboration and shared commitment. Together, we can create safer, more nurturing environments where every child can thrive.
