FROM EVIDENCE TO ACCOUNTABILITY: KAMUKUNJI YOUTH ARE CLOSING THE SGBV GAP

We joined a multistakeholder engagement at PCEA Kariri, hosted by Nairobi County Kamukunji Sub-County Health SGBV Unit, bringing together the Deputy County Commissioner, Chief, Pumwani Maternity, ODPP, Police, Children’s Officer, and over 30 organizations — 90% youth-led.

The county data for January to May 2026 is clear: 869 pregnancies among girls 15-24, 299 of 540 SGBV survivors were children under 18, including 25 child marriage survivors aged 10-17. Only 56% of girls 10-17 reached care within 72 hours for PEP and emergency care, compared to 73% overall. 999 survivors were offered counselling. These are not just numbers, these are our children.

We agreed on three practical actions. First, make reporting channels known, because fear and stigma cost us the critical 72 hours. Second, share when services work and justice happens, to build community trust. Third, strengthen collaboration across all stakeholders, because no single office holds the full referral pathway.

Heroes don't always wear medals.

Some wear everyday clothes. They sit with a friend who is struggling. They calm a conflict before it grows. They speak up for sexual and reproductive health and rights. They protect the planet we all call home.

They are our Mashujaa.

This Mashujaa Day 2026, we honour every person who builds peace, champions mental wellbeing, stands for SRHR and fights for climate justice in their community. Your courage does not go unseen. Your work is changing lives.

🌍 When Partnership Becomes Change

Great change rarely happens alone. It happens when people choose to walk together.

Diplomats For Health In Resilient Community Dfh-Rc is proud to receive a Certificate of Appreciation from DOT Kenya , recognising our collaboration in advancing community-led climate innovation and resilience.

In just a few months, DOT Kenya's volunteers and Climate Champions joined hands with the people of Pumwani Ward. They did not come to decide for us. They came to sit with us, listen, and build alongside us.

Together, we turned waste into hope:
🧱 30 eco bricks produced
♻️ 12 kg of single-use plastic kept out of drains and open ground
🤝 9 community members trained
🧹 A community clean-up day completed
🔁 A collection routine the community now runs on its own

This is what happens when local knowledge meets youth energy, and when a community is given space to lead.

To DOT Kenya, Ann Itumbi ,Vincent Wanjala, and every volunteer: thank you for believing in our community. And to the women of Pumwani who showed up week after week: you are the heartbeat of this work.

The story continues. Our next milestone is a community bench at the ward's playground, where waste once walked through becomes a place to gather.

Because when we walk together, we go further.

"A seed does not beg the soil for permission to grow, it only needs the soil to be safe."

Girls are the same. Give a girl safe ground, a listening ear and a community that believes her, and she will grow into a force for peace. But safe ground is built by everyone. Boys and men are not bystanders in this story, they are allies. That is what we have seen in our work, from the signs we hold in our neighbourhoods, men and women side by side, to the seedlings we plant together.

Our stand
🧡 Girls and women deserve to live free from violence, and boys and men are partners in making that real.
💚 Peace of mind is a right, and every lived experience deserves to be heard without judgment.
🤝 Men and boys protect, respect and speak up, and they hold themselves and each other accountable.
🌍 Caring for our environment is part of caring for people, because peace and a healthy planet grow together.

Lessons we have learnt
Peace is personal before it is public. Change begins in one person, one home, one choice.

Boys and men are key allies. Violence against girls and women ends faster when men refuse to excuse it, speak up against it and model respect.

Violence is learned, so it can be unlearned. Boys who grow up with healthy examples of manhood break the cycle for the next generation.

Lived experience is expertise. Survivors understand best what protection needs to look like, and their voices should lead.

Healing needs safe spaces for everyone. Men and boys also need room to talk about their feelings, which makes them stronger allies.

Nature teaches nurture. Planting a tree reminds us that care, patience and protection bring life.

Small actions, done together, spread. One sign, one seedling or one conversation can start something much bigger.

To every boy and man: be the safe place, be the voice that says "this is not okay," and be the change.

Two generations, one message: Tunza Mazingira, Tunza Amani

Peace has no age. When elders share their wisdom and young people bring energy and new ideas, communities grow stronger.

Our elders have seen how the land, the water, and the peace we share can be lost, and how they can be restored. Our youth will carry that care into the future. When the two walk together, we protect the environment, heal minds, and build peace that lasts.

Ask an elder for their story. Share your ideas with a young person. Plant a tree together. Listen to each other, because a heart that is heard finds peace.

Peace begins with me. Peace begins with us.

Localization is not a buzzword. It is the future of development.

Last month, Diplomats For Health In Resilient Community Dfh-Rc joined the launch of HESED-Africa 's Sustainable Model Program (SMP) Journey Book: Focus on Localization (2022-2026). We were proud to be represented by our own Charles Odhiambo

As Diplomats For Health In Resilient Community, we have been part of this journey. We are grateful to HESED Africa for the impact they have had on us and on other community organizations working at the local level.

What we are taking with us:
💡 Communities hold the solutions. Our role is to strengthen them, not replace them.
