Ugunja Municipality as the Siaya County Government anchor is driving Climate Resilience in Siaya and stepping forward as a leader in climate-smart and green tech growth. In December, Kijiji Yeetu worked with Ugunja Youth Parliament, Ushahidi, Internet Society Foundation Internet Society Ugunja Daily Report presented a Climate Resilience Report and Policy Brief to the Municipality Manager. This marks a pivotal moment in aligning local realities with national priorities and global frameworks like SDG 13 (Climate Action).
Key findings:
🚫 Floods displaced 40,000 residents in 2020; nearly 80% of households rely on rain-fed agriculture.
🚫 Youth potential: 60–75% of residents are under 35, positioning them as climate innovators.
🚫 Community priorities: Water shortages (29.8%), flooding (19%), deforestation (16.6%).
🚫 Adaptation actions: Tree planting (20.9%), community dams (12.3%), rainwater harvesting.
Targets:
⭕ 40% of households reached by multi-hazard early warning systems.
⭕ 40% of farmers adopting climate-smart agriculture.
⭕ 20% reduction in climate-related hazards through resilient infrastructure investments.
