The global world AIDS Day theme for 2022 is Equalise,a call to end inequalities that impact access to HIV treatment and prevention services. In Kenya, People who use drugs have an HIV prevalence of 18.7% whereas the general population is at 4.9%.Kenya has the largest Programmes for people who inject drugs despite the challenging laws and policies that limit the development and integration of services needed to people who use drugs. There is an urgent need of engaging policy makers to change laws and policies in place. Its time to Equalise!

Research has shown harm reduction is one of the most effective tools to help people who use drugs, and advocates say such programs are needed more than ever. However, these programs cannot be effective when laws and policies in the country are harsh and punitive hindering treatment. Without rehabilitation, people who use drugs are trapped in an endless cycle. Its time for change! Evidence-based legislation and public health methods that are effective in combatting drug abuse in Kenya are required.

According to the WHO, more than half of the people who use drugs in Kenya are 10-19 years of age.

Those of us who stand outside the circle of this society’s definition of acceptable persons ; those of us who have been forged in the crucibles of difference — those of us who are poor and live is slums, who are LGBTQIGNC those of us who use drugs , those who dropped out of school — know that survival is not an academic skill.
It is learning how to stand alone, unpopular and sometimes reviled, and how to make
common cause with those others identified as outside the structures in order to define and
seek a world in which we can all flourish
