A weekend reflection on sustainable living and the partnerships that can help make it possible. 🌱

This week, led by our Founder and Executive Lead, Wangui Karanja and our Fundraising and Partnerships officer Ochieng, Square One Eco Africa had an insightful engagement with the National Council for Nomadic Education on Kenya (NACONEK), where we explored opportunities for collaboration between its basic education mandate and our Just & Equitable Energy Transition thematic area.

Our conversation focused on the connection between education, community engagement and clean energy, particularly for communities in ASAL and coastal areas.

We were especially pleased to learn about a steam cooking system being advanced for institutional cooking. Solutions such as this can contribute to improved energy efficiency, reduced reliance on carbon-intensive cooking fuels and a transition towards cleaner cooking.

For SOEA, technology is only part of the journey. Communities need the knowledge, agency and opportunities to understand, adopt and benefit from sustainable solutions.

We appreciate the NACONEK team and the engineer behind this initiative for sharing their work and lessons with us.

As we advance our JEET Champions pathway, we welcome collaboration with partners working across clean energy, clean cooking, education and community development to help translate sustainable solutions into meaningful change at community level.

And true to our name Square One Eco Africa, we believe transformation must start at the grassroots, with the people, not just for the people.

Together with Mathare’s waste pickers and building on our earlier engagement with Dandora waste pickers under the SOEA_NCCG Community Environmental Champions Initiative (CECI),we are listening, exchanging ideas and shaping an experience that speaks to the community’s realities, aspirations and energy.

Because this is about youth, sport, environmental action, livelihoods and community ownership, coming together to create something meaningful.

And we are only getting started. 🔥🌍

Africa's clean energy transition depends on more than innovation, it depends on access to finance.

Our Fundraising & Partnerships Officer, Nahshon Omollo, represented Square One Eco Africa at a regional webinar on Unlocking Domestic Finance for Clean Cooking & Carbon Markets, where leaders explored how blended finance, policy innovation, and stronger financial systems can help bridge the gap between upfront investment and future carbon revenues.

These conversations directly reinforce our work in:

⚡ Just & Equitable Energy Transition

Communities across Kenya's ASAL counties and informal settlements need climate finance that accelerates access to clean cooking, renewable energy, and resilient livelihoods.

Kenya's new Guide for Strategic Engagement in Carbon Markets is an important step towards making that vision a reality.

Clean cooking is about healthier children, cleaner air, stronger education systems and a more sustainable future.

On 27 July 2026, SOEA was represented by our Fundraising & Partnerships Officer, Nahshon Omollo, at the National Sensitization Workshop on Data Collection and Pipeline Development for Institutional Clean Cooking and the Sustainable Expansion of the National School Meals Program.

The workshop highlighted Kenya's commitment to transitioning schools to clean cooking by 2028, supported by stronger data systems, public-private partnerships and innovative financing.

These discussions align closely with our SOEA Just & Equitable Energy Transition (JEET) Champions Program, through which we are exploring how clean cooking, renewable energy and solar-powered innovations can create lasting impact, not only in schools but also within households and communities.

With nearly 60% of the world's best solar resources, Africa has an incredible opportunity to lead the global clean energy transition. Through collaboration, innovation and community-led action, we can help unlock this potential.

Thank you to all the organizers and partners for creating this important platform for learning and collaboration.

What does the next generation think about Artificial Intelligence?

This week, our Programme Officer, Stephanie Ndiritu, attended the launch webinar of the Youth AI Survey 2026 Report, hosted by Restless Development, Makerere University, and the Centre for Human-Compatible AI.

The report shares the perspectives of over 1,800 young people across 11 countries and three regions, revealing that AI is already part of everyday life for many young people.

Among the key findings:

✔️ 64.4% use AI every day.
✔️ Education is the most common use of AI.
✔️ Women continue to face access and confidence gaps.
✔️ Data ownership and privacy are the biggest concerns.
✔️ Affordable internet remains essential for equitable access.

These insights resonate strongly with our work at Square One Eco Africa. As we continue developing climate technology innovations, we believe young people should have the skills and confidence to use AI responsibly to solve local environmental and development challenges.

Thank you to Restless Development Makerere University, and the Centre for Human-Compatible A for creating this learning opportunity.

📚 We encourage everyone interested in youth, technology and development to explore the reports shared during the webinar.
