The Refuge

The Refuge The Refuge is a ministry that helps Kenyan students with their Spiritual, Physical, and Educational needs through scolorship and support.

The Refuge is located in Nairobi, Kenya that supports the educational, physically, and spiritual needs of children through scholarship and support. Many of these children's parents are single parents, or grandparents that cannot afford food for the kids or pay their school fees. With the support of sponsors, we are able to the funds needed for each child every day which excites the kids! We cannot

do this without sponsors! These children need your support! Support goes to pay for each child's needs accordingly.

Hello everyone!

Here are a few updates on the Refuge/ Rescued ~ Kuokolewa ( Kuokolewa is the Swahili word for rescued )

Let me first introduce my husband and I and our board to you! Our names are Dwayne and Karla Webre we have been married for 45 years. Karla is ordained through the Assembly of God. We have been working on the mission fields since 2014. We love Jesus Christ with all of our hearts. We live in Houma, Louisiana and go to Bayou Blue Assembly of God. Dwayne serves on the board at our church and is the maintance man there. Karla is a big part of our church thrift store “Missions Possible Thrift Store” which has helped support a lot of mission projects for many missionaries. Missions is a big part of Dwayne and Karls’s life’s. We have served on Mikey and Shereen board since 2020 and have learned a great deal from them. Dwayne and I have taken on the responsibility of the Refuge from Mikey and Shereen Cheshier. We are honored to have been chosen for and trusted with this responsibility.

Here is our wonderful board that is dedicated to helping us insure that this great task moves forward!
Katie and Cory Bourg
Eyan and Alyssa Webre
Greg Lane

Each person here has wonderful talents and value to add to the success of pursuing what God has put on our hearts. They too see the vision and carry this passion with us. We are not called to do anything by ourselves, God puts people in our lives to uplift each other, pray for each other , and to do ministry along side each other.

As you may know we have our first success story with our 14 children from the Refuge. 6 of them have graduated high school! Praise the Lord!!! We couldn’t have done this without your financial support and prayers! Here are the name of our graduates:
1.Kennedy
2.Charles
3.Faith
4.Sheila
5.Lucy
6.Kelvin
This will be new territory as we help them through University or technical school. We feel this will help insure their future for success. Here are some of our plans for them:

1. We will get a Kenyan who is educated in budgeting money to teach them how to budget money well before they actually start making money. In Kenyan culture it is not acceptable for them to have a job while they are in school. Jobs are hard to find and will not work with students and schooling.
2. We will have a Kenyan counselor come and help our girls navigate through what the work force looks like in Kenya and how to get through real life situations that comes up for women in Kenya. I feel this is very important for them. I will also get counseling for the boys on real life situations for them as Kenyan men in the work force. I also want them to know that they are not alone and that we are there to help them through the process of this next step in their lives. Most importantly we want them to know that Jesus Christ is always with them every step of the way.
3. For all the children we will be getting someone to teach them self defense classes. This is really important to teach them this life skill. Maybe I will be learning this myself!

All of the children are currently staying together in a rent house in Nairobi. The children are currently enrolled in a new school year. The new school year starts in January. Please keep them in your prayers!

We will keep everyone posted on all of these things!

Dwayne and I have a heart to rescue vulnerable children that are exposed to s*x trafficking or physical abuse. God has put this on our hearts a few years ago and now we see His hand moving us forward in this directions. The children we have now have been rescued and were certainly at great risk of being s*x trafficked, and they have experienced abuse in many ways, but this is their story to tell. As they become young adults they all have said that they wish to help their communities with the skills they have learned.
We will be plowing ground with rescuing children from s*x trafficking in Kenya. We have some resources that we are working on and plan to do outreaches in these areas to preach the word of God. Here is our immediate needs:
1. Building/land funds for a safe house for the children
2. Vehicle for transportation for the children and us
3. Outreach materiel for s*x trafficking ministry. We would like to get some brochures to pass out and many other things that come up.

Will you consider helping us financially with any of these projects? Or supporting us monthly? No amount of
money is too small. Prayers are definitely appreciated and are needed as well!

A New Season for The Refuge!

Graduation
Before we discuss the new season, let’s celebrate one of the greatest achievements in The Refuge’s history! Six of our kids successfully graduated from Highschool in 2025. These kids overcame trials and hardships to be successful in their studies. Listed from left to right, Faith, Shiela, Kelvin, Kennedy, Lucy, and Charles.

Street Ministry and Teens Camp
We also had the opportunity to spend some time together for some evangelism and a youth camp in Kisumu. The Refuge kids ministered in the streets with us and were able to attend the youth camp. The services were powerfully lifechanging for everyone in attendance. Here are some pics of the powerful ministry:

The New Season
As we all celebrate the transition from 2025 into 2026 we look forward to change and a fresh start. Just as the new year brings change for all of us personally, The Refuge is also experiencing a fresh start. Dawayne and Karla Webre will be taking on the role of directing The Refuge. Dwayne and Karla came along side Mikey and Shereen to assist with The Refuge in 2021. Since then, their heart and passion for this ministry has expanded through the Lord’s guidance. He has given them a vision for The Refuge which they have committed to carry out.
Their ministry name is Rescued - Kuokolewa.

Support
The Refuge still needs prayer and financial support. With this exciting new change, support funds need to be sent directly to the Webre’s ministry.
There are a few ways to give, mail a check or give online through their website.
