The nPOC ACCESS Project is advancing TB diagnosis and treatment initiation in Department of Health Services - Kiambu County through the evaluation of near point-of-care TB diagnostics and an AI-enabled digital stethoscope across Thika, Kabete, Juja, Lari, and Limuru sub-counties.
Today, the project team is holding a county entry meeting bringing together county and sub-county stakeholders, healthcare workers, laboratory teams ahead of implementation.
The study aims to assess the effectiveness, feasibility, acceptability, and cost-effectiveness of innovative TB diagnostic approaches designed to accelerate case confirmation, improve equity, and reduce delays in treatment initiation, particularly for patients unable to produce sputum samples.
The project will evaluate the Mini-Doc MTB assay and AI digital stethoscope against the current standard of care while generating evidence to strengthen diagnostic algorithms, support same-day treatment initiation, and reduce pre-treatment loss to follow-up.

Lung health is increasingly being prioritized within Kenya’s broader respiratory health agenda. Presented during the Mid-Term Review Report Writing and Dissemination Meeting of the National Strategic Plan for Tuberculosis, Leprosy and Lung Health by Dr. Nkirote Mugambi-Nyaboga, CoP Tamatisha TB, the discussion highlighted a strong shift towards integrated, people-centered approaches to prevention, early diagnosis, treatment, and long-term management of respiratory conditions.

This approach leverages existing TB platforms to build a more responsive and comprehensive lung health system that addresses the full spectrum of respiratory diseases.
The presentation further underscored the importance of integration across service delivery levels, strengthened surveillance and data systems, and improved access to quality care for communities affected by respiratory illnesses.

Following the Mid-Term Review entry meeting held in Nairobi on Monday, Embu County is now actively engaged in the ongoing review of the National Strategic Plan for Tuberculosis, Leprosy and Lung Health 2023/24–2027/28.

The county teams, healthcare workers, patients, and partners are participating in consultative engagements aimed at assessing progress, identifying gaps, and strengthening implementation of interventions across all levels of care.

This process continues to provide valuable insights that will guide improved coordination, service delivery, and accelerated efforts towards ending TB and Leprosy by 2030 while improving lung health outcomes.

As we undertake the Mid-Term Review of the National Strategic Plan for Tuberculosis, Leprosy and Lung Health, we begin an important journey of reflection, learning, and accountability.

The entry meeting marks the start of field visits to health facilities across the country to assess progress, identify gaps, and understand whether the strategies and interventions outlined in the plan are translating into meaningful impact for communities.

This process will provide valuable insights on what is working, where improvements are needed, and how we can strengthen people-centered, integrated, and sustainable TB, leprosy, and lung health services.

Through evidence, experiences from the field, and engagement with healthcare workers and communities, the review will help shape the next phase of implementation towards achieving national and global targets by 2030.
