The establishment of the WASH–NTD Community of Practice (CoP) was the main outcome of a two-day stakeholder forum convened by the Kenya National Public Health Institute in partnership with Wash Alliance Kenya.

The forum brought together key stakeholders from national and county governments, the private sector, research institutions, civil society and youth representatives to shape a coordinated platform for integrating Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) interventions with Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) programming in Kenya.

Stakeholders reached a consensus to formally constitute the WASH–NTD Community of Practice as a platform for collaboration, coordination, knowledge sharing, and joint advocacy on integrated WASH and NTD programming. The Kenya National Public Health Institute was proposed to serve as the Secretariat leading coordination efforts, alongside a proposed 13-member Steering Committee that will provide leadership, technical guidance, and oversight for the operationalization of the CoP.

The Community of Practice will bring together practitioners, researchers, policymakers and private sector actors to strengthen integrated planning, support implementation, and promote shared learning across sectors.

Its work will focus on five pillars:
• Research & Knowledge Management
• Policy Advocacy
• Technical Assistance
• Capacity Building
• Monitoring, Evaluation & Learning

The meeting also provided space for stakeholders to establish a shared vision and goals for the CoP, exchange knowledge and experiences, identify capacity gaps, and develop an action plan for sustained engagement and collaboration. Discussions emphasized the need for coordinated WASH and health interventions in addressing the factors that continue to contribute to Neglected Tropical Diseases in affected communities across Kenya.

This week, the Kenya National Public Health Institute (KNPHI) is convening the first-ever Kenya Health Security Convention under the theme: “Advancing Health Security Through Science, Innovation and Equity.”

The convention has brought together policymakers, scientists, public health professionals, healthcare practitioners, security experts, industry leaders, and development partners to share knowledge, innovations, and strategies aimed at strengthening health systems and enhancing pandemic preparedness and response.

As WASH Alliance Kenya we are elated to be part of this important national platform, reaffirming our continuous commitment to advancing the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) and Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) agenda through close collaboration with the The Ministry of Health and county governments.

At the convention, the County Government of Vihiga NTD Coordinator Fanuel Khainga presented a poster on “STH and WASH: An Integrated Approach – The Case of Mwibona Ward,” highlighting the critical role of integrated WASH interventions in combating Soil-Transmitted Helminths (STH) and improving community health outcomes.

Through partnerships, advocacy, evidence generation, and community-centered interventions, WASH Alliance Kenya continues to support efforts towards resilient health systems, disease prevention, and equitable access to WASH services across Kenya.

Earlier today, we joined the Vihiga Youth WASH Parliament in a strategic courtesy call with Governor Wilber Khasilwa Ottichilo to reaffirm our partnership with the County Government of Vihiga on WASH and the elimination of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs).

The engagement focused on aligning youth-led priorities with county systems, strengthening coordination, and accelerating implementation of inclusive, community-driven interventions.

It underscored the critical role of structured youth engagement in improving service delivery, enhancing accountability, and ensuring that WASH and NTD responses effectively reach underserved populations.

As part of the engagement, we also presented the Kenya National WASH Coordination Framework on combating NTDs alongside the Advocacy, Communication, and Social Mobilization (ACSM) documents, to the Governor and key stakeholders strengthening a shared understanding of coordinated action, policy alignment, and community-centered approaches.

This was followed by the launch of a Vihiga Youth WASH Parliament 2026-2028 strategic plan that provides a clear, results-oriented framework for advancing WASH and NTD outcomes in the county.

The plan outlines priority actions to expand equitable access to safe water and sanitation, strengthen hygiene behavior change, and support integrated NTD interventions, while institutionalizing youth participation within governance and implementation structures.

By linking policy, financing, and community-level action, the strategy is designed to deliver measurable impact reduced disease burden, improved public health outcomes, and increased resilience of communities while positioning youth as key partners in driving sustainable, county-wide change.

Join us for the Official Launch and Unveiling of the 2026–2028 Strategic Plan of the Vihiga Youth WASH Parliament currently ongoing at Phanero School, Mbale. This milestone event, themed “Empowering Youth for Climate-Resilient WASH, NTD Elimination & Accountable Governance,” brings together government leaders, development partners, civil society, private sector actors, and young innovators to advance sustainable water, sanitation, and hygiene solutions.

This milestone event marks the unveiling of the 2026–2028 Strategic Plan of the Vihiga Youth WASH Parliament, a roadmap designed to strengthen meaningful youth participation in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) governance. Anchored on the theme “Empowering Youth for Climate-Resilient WASH, NTD Elimination & Accountable Governance,” the strategy positions young people as key drivers of innovation, accountability, and community-led solutions in the sector.

By creating structured platforms for engagement, leadership, and advocacy, the strategy aims to equip youth with the skills and opportunities needed to influence policy, champion climate-resilient practices, and accelerate progress toward improved WASH outcomes. Last week, with support from The END Fund, we conducted trainings for 40 school Boards of Management (BoMs) across Vihiga, Kakamega, Trans Nzoia, and Bungoma counties, in partnership with county and national stakeholders. The sessions strengthened BoMs’ understanding of governance, leadership, and financial oversight of school WASH facilities, with a focus on improving operation and maintenance.

BoM members gained clearer insights into their roles under the Basic Education Act, including planning, budgeting, and ensuring accountability in managing sanitation infrastructure.

Follow-up engagements with WASH champions and Community Health Promoters also highlighted progress in community sensitization, while identifying areas to strengthen reporting and support systems.

Overall, the initiative reinforced both school and community-level efforts to improve sanitation, promote hygiene, and sustain safe learning environments.

Kenya marked World Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) Day with coordinated efforts at both national and county levels. In Kajiado, the leadership and sector implementing agencies emphasized cross-border collaboration, mass drug administration, and sustained investment to ensure no community is left behind.

Meanwhile, in Vihiga, Trans Nzoia, Bungoma, and Kakamega, communities and county officials mobilized for awareness campaigns, health screenings, and exhibitions, highlighting prevention and integrated health interventions..

These collective actions underscore the urgent need for continued community engagement and multi-sectoral collaboration to eliminate NTDs and secure a healthier future for all.

At WASH Alliance Kenya, we strongly believe that eliminating Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) is possible when communities, partners and duty bearers work together.

Through strong partnerships with the Kenya National Public Health Institute, government ministries, civil society, private sector, communities and development partners, we have seen the power of collective action in driving health impact.

Central to our approach is community ownership empowering local communities to take charge of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) practices, monitor their health environment, and hold duty bearers accountable for delivering essential services.

Access to safe water, improved sanitation, and proper hygiene not only prevents NTD transmission but also strengthens community resilience and ensures sustainable progress.

By combining partnership-driven initiatives, WASH interventions, and community engagement, we are moving closer to a future free from NTDs where communities lead, and duty bearers deliver.

As we mark tomorrow, millions of people still face daily exposure to schistosomiasis (SCH) and soil-transmitted helminths (STH) because safe water, sanitation, and hygiene remain out of reach.

This suffering is preventable.

Ending it requires collective action; Invest in WASH, strengthen prevention and break the cycle of reinfection.
