The establishment of the WASH–NTD Community of Practice (CoP) was the main outcome of a two-day stakeholder forum convened by the Kenya National Public Health Institute in partnership with Wash Alliance Kenya.
The forum brought together key stakeholders from national and county governments, the private sector, research institutions, civil society and youth representatives to shape a coordinated platform for integrating Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) interventions with Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) programming in Kenya.
Stakeholders reached a consensus to formally constitute the WASH–NTD Community of Practice as a platform for collaboration, coordination, knowledge sharing, and joint advocacy on integrated WASH and NTD programming. The Kenya National Public Health Institute was proposed to serve as the Secretariat leading coordination efforts, alongside a proposed 13-member Steering Committee that will provide leadership, technical guidance, and oversight for the operationalization of the CoP.
The Community of Practice will bring together practitioners, researchers, policymakers and private sector actors to strengthen integrated planning, support implementation, and promote shared learning across sectors.
Its work will focus on five pillars:
• Research & Knowledge Management
• Policy Advocacy
• Technical Assistance
• Capacity Building
• Monitoring, Evaluation & Learning
The meeting also provided space for stakeholders to establish a shared vision and goals for the CoP, exchange knowledge and experiences, identify capacity gaps, and develop an action plan for sustained engagement and collaboration. Discussions emphasized the need for coordinated WASH and health interventions in addressing the factors that continue to contribute to Neglected Tropical Diseases in affected communities across Kenya.
