Community, responsibility, and mental wellness are deeply connected. When people are denied dignity, safety, or the ability to make informed choices about their lives, the consequences are not only social, they are psychological.
For Mental Health Awareness Month, yesterday we joined the Slum Peace and Empowerment Center (SPEC) and the Kibera community for an intergenerational dialogue on Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR). The conversation explored an important truth: mental health shapes how people navigate relationships, identity, trauma, decision-making, and reproductive experiences.
Real change begins in communities willing to have honest conversations. We are grateful to Mirror of Hope C.B.O Hope CBO for standing with us in this dialogue and continuing the work of creating spaces where healing, support, and growth are possible.
We also want to remind the community that affordable and accessible mental healthcare exists right within Kibera. Professional counseling services are available at our Community Wellness Centres located at Mirror of Hope CBO (Kibera Drive) and The Point Trust (Mashimoni Ward). If you or someone you know needs a safe and confidential space to talk, heal, and rebuild, please visit us or share this information with someone who may need it.
A stronger community is built when people choose to look out for one another.
