Hakijamii recently convened a Dialogue and Networking Session on Access to Justice, the UPR Process and Community-Based Support for Lawyers, Community Paralegals and Social Justice Actors held at Dandora Social Justice Centre.

We mapped out critical and clear operational pathways to handle forced evictions and disruption of basic services affecting residents in informal settlements.

The support of German Embassy Nairobi not only made this necessary convening possible but continues to fuel the advancement of equitable access to land, housing, and basic services for marginalized communities in Kenya's Informal Settlements.

To protect our shrinking biodiversity and build resilient ecosystems, community inclusion must be anchored into our institutional frameworks, ensuring women, youth, and vulnerable groups are part of every process; because top-down project implementation that excludes minority groups and local stewards is no longer sustainable.

Let’s build a society that demands absolute accountability and integration of local communities in safeguarding our planet!

Watch this news feature by TV 47 Kenya from our recent National Policy Dialogue in Nairobi, supported by WWF-Kenya, championing rights-based accountability in environmental governance for marginalized communities.

Every fraction of a degree brings greater harm, especially to the most vulnerable. The UN Secretary-General’s message this is a stark reminder that climate change deepens hunger, destroys homes, and threatens health.

But halting this crisis requires more than global declarations; it demands local accountability. Under our Sustainable Livelihoods and Climate Justice pillar, Hakijamii fights to ensure that environmental governance frameworks and climate budgets directly serve and include marginalized groups. From protecting forests to climate adaptation, the safest and most effective solutions are already being driven by the communities themselves.

At Hakijamii, we believe a sustainable environment is a fundamental human right. When we secure land rights, safeguard natural resources, and empower local communities, we create a resilient, nature-positive future for everyone.

This feature by , with support from Hakijamii and WWF-Kenya highlights our collaboration with communities in cultivating change and creating solutions on Biodiversity, Climate and Environmental Governance for the marginalized poor.

Last week, Hakijamii joined partners in Kisumu for the Resilience Action Network Africa (RANA) convening, which brought together RANA Steering Committee Members, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) Working Group Members, community dialogue partners, and strategic allies.

The convening provided an opportunity to share key insights from the Skoll World Forum and reflect on their implications for RANA’s advocacy positioning. It also served as a platform for convening the CSO Working Group to strengthen coordinated engagement on resilience, disaster preparedness, climate financing, accountability, and systems transformation.

Through these collective engagements, partners reaffirmed their commitment to advancing locally led resilience and strengthening collaboration to address emerging social, economic, and climate-related challenges for marginalized communities.

Today, we join the nation in celebrating , marking the historic moment in 1963 when Kenya attained internal self-rule and took the first monumental step toward breaking the chains of colonialism.

But as we look at our nation today, we must ask ourselves: Has the promise of Madaraka truly reached every corner of Kenya?

True self-rule cannot just be a historical date on a calendar while our marginalized and vulnerable communities still face systemic exclusion, arbitrary evictions, and a shrinking civic space. Independence is incomplete if indigenous and minority groups are left out of the decisions governing their own lands, resources, and economic, social, and cultural rights (ESCR).

As we commemorate our founding fathers' sacrifices, we must confront our current socio-economic challenges by demanding institutional accountability, equal resource distribution, and justice for all.

On 25th May 2026, Hakijamii participated in the National Dissemination Forum on the study “Land at the Core of Kenya’s Refugee Governance Model: A Vision for Garissa”, convened by the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) and Haki na Sheria at the Swiss-Belinn Hotel, Nairobi, and attended by government agencies, civil society organizations, refugee rights actors and development partners.

Stakeholders discussed the role of land in refugee governance in Kenya, including issues of hosting, land access, planning and policies that will bring lasting solutions for refugee-hosting communities, especially in Garissa County.

Hakijamii calls on all stakeholders to implement inclusive land governance and secure tenure models in Garissa County, ensuring the socioeconomic rights and dignity of minority host communities and refugees are legally protected.
