When enforcement falls behind, illegal fishing thrives. The result is declining fish stocks, threatened livelihoods, and growing pressure on marine ecosystems.
As we count down to OOC 2026, we'll be exploring how stronger surveillance, enforcement, and coordination can help protect fisheries and support sustainable ocean management.

Small-scale fishers, fish traders, and local ocean enterprises drive the blue economy, yet many remain excluded from the financing and opportunities needed to grow.
As we count down to OOC 2026, join the conversation on building a more inclusive and equitable blue economy.

Today, on , EAWLS hosted a media briefing ahead of the 11th Our Ocean Conference (OOC11), a historic event that will see Kenya become the first African nation to host the global ocean summit in Mombasa in 2026.

We were honoured to welcome Betsy Muthoni Njagi, CBS, Principal Secretary for the State Department for Blue Economy and Fisheries, who highlighted Kenya’s leadership in ocean governance and the opportunities OOC11 presents for investment, sustainable livelihoods, marine conservation, and the blue economy.

The briefing also provided an opportunity for the media to better understand the conference and its significance, helping ensure accurate reporting as Kenya prepares to host leaders, experts, investors, and stakeholders from around the world.

At EAWLS, we remain committed to ensuring that coastal communities, youth, women, and small-scale fishers have a voice in shaping Kenya’s ocean commitments.

Marine protected areas are most effective when coastal communities are meaningfully involved in their design, management, and restoration. Excluding local communities from conservation processes can weaken local ownership, create conflict around resource use, and limit long-term conservation outcomes. Strengthening inclusive co-management models and recognizing locally managed marine areas is critical to scaling effective and sustainable ocean protection.

Plastic pollution continues to flow into marine ecosystems across the Western Indian Ocean, threatening biodiversity, fisheries, coastal livelihoods, and public health. Weak enforcement, poor waste management systems, and unsustainable product design continue to fuel the crisis. Addressing plastic pollution requires stronger producer responsibility regulations, improved oversight, and coordinated action to stop pollution at its source before it reaches the ocean.

The blue economy sustains millions through fisheries, trade, and marine livelihoods, yet small-scale fishers and local ocean enterprises remain excluded from financing and investment opportunities. As momentum around the blue economy grows, inclusive financing systems are critical to ensuring coastal communities can fully participate in and benefit from ocean-based development.
