Water Insecurity in Kakuma: A Growing Humanitarian Emergency
Kakuma faces a severe water crisis that threatens health, dignity, and peace. Rapid population growth, climate-driven droughts, and aging infrastructure leave thousands without reliable and safe water. Women and children walk long distances and queue for hours, while persons with disabilities struggle the most.
Women and children wake up before sunrise, walking long distances under extreme heat, only to queue for hours for a few jerrycans of water. Sometimes, they return home empty-handed. The water that is available is often insufficient, unreliable, or unsafe, increasing the risk of disease, conflict, and loss of dignity.
Children miss school. Women face protection risks. Families are forced to choose between drinking, cooking, and basic hygiene.
The impact is clear: rising waterborne diseases, school absenteeism, protection risks for women and girls, and conflict at overcrowded water points.
Through Strong Unity for Refugee Empowerment (SURE), the community is calling for sustainable solutions, solar-powered boreholes, rainwater harvesting, and community-managed water systems.
We are targeting to raise fund for a 10.000 litres water tank able to Conserve water π¦
