ACK proudly represented Kenya in the first coordinated range-wide conservation planning meeting for cheetahs and wild dogs. The East-Africa regional and Kenya National meetings were held back to back - bringing governments and conservationists together to safeguard ecosystems, livelihoods and the natural heritage of future generations.

Cheetahs do not recognize borders. Their survival depends on connected landscapes, shared knowledge and unified science-based action.

The first strategic plans helped us set priorities that would guide our research and actions for the next 15 years.

Today, on Earth Day 2026, we join the global movement inspired by this yearโ€™s theme: โ€œOur Power, Our Planet.โ€ This theme reminds us that real change begins with people; through the choices we make, the wildlife we protect, and the communities we empower.

At Action for Cheetahs in Kenya (ACK), we know that protecting our planet means protecting the species that depend on it. Every cheetah saved, every habitat preserved, and every young person inspired to care for nature is a step toward a healthier Earth.

From the open landscapes of northern Kenya to communities living alongside wildlife, conservation is powered by partnership, education, and action.

This Earth Day, let us use our power to:
๐Ÿ† Protect wildlife
๐ŸŒฑ Preserve habitats
๐Ÿค Support communities
๐ŸŒ Build a sustainable future for all

Together, we can ensure that our planet remains wild, beautiful, and full of life for generations to come.

Cheetah cubs are not born knowing how to hunt. Their mother teaches them by example as they grow. Cubs first watch her stalk prey, then practice chasing small or weak animals she brings to them.

As they get older, cubs join real hunts and learn important skills like speed, patience, and timing. They stay with their mother for up to two years before becoming independent hunters.

Help us protect cheetah families and their future. Support conservation efforts today: https://www.actionforcheetahs.org

The Gr8 Cheetah Census is a powerful way to help protect one of the worldโ€™s most vulnerable big cats and you can be part of it!

By contributing your cheetah sightings, you help conservationists build a clearer picture of cheetah populations and movements across the landscape.
Hereโ€™s how you can participate:
๐Ÿ“ธ 1. Capture โ€“ Take clear photos or videos of any cheetah you spot (especially their unique spot patterns).
๐Ÿ“ 2. Record โ€“ Note the location, date, and time of your sighting.
๐Ÿ“ค 3. Share โ€“ Submit your sighting.
๐Ÿ” 4. Support โ€“ Spread the word and encourage others to take part in the census.

Each contribution helps researchers identify individual cheetahs, monitor populations, and guide conservation action.

Together, we can turn sightings into science and science into protection.

As if we did not have enough on our plates, 2007 brought several learning opportunities our way. It was no a small feat managing the national survey, moving to Makueni and sending our team off jet-setting!

Our parent organization, Cheetah Conservation Fund (Namibia), initiated a series of training on Livestock Husbandry and Cheetah Biology. We were offered several scholarships for our staff (Lumumba and Cosmas) and other conservation partners.

Cosmas attended a training on GIS with a scholarship for one month that included attending the largest ESRI conference hosted in California. Cosmas also received funds to attend university to complete his master's degree in Ethiopia.

Later last month, ACKโ€™s Educational Officer, Aldina Lekuye, had the honor of attending the Lolokwe Primary School first term closing meeting alongside teachers and school leadership. The session provided a valuable opportunity to reflect on the termโ€™s progress and collaboratively plan for the upcoming term.

Accompanied by Kivoi, Aldina also shared ACKโ€™s โ€œ๐˜Š๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ๐˜ค๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜‹๐˜ฐ๐˜ต๐˜ดโ€ calendars, highlighting the organizationโ€™s ongoing commitment to conservation education and community engagement. Such engagements play a key role in fostering awareness and inspiring both learners and educators.

ACK looks forward to strengthening this partnership and continuing to support the school community in the next term.

Throwback Thursday
The first Gr8Cheetah Census โ€“ 2006

As our field team (ACK and East African Wild Life Society) hit the roads of Kenya to conduct the first National Cheetah Survey we also launched a citizen science campaign for cheetah ID. We sent emails to tour companies, conservancies and researchers to ask for cheetah photos. Using manual cheetah ID, we recorded more than 200 individual cheetahs across the cheetahโ€™s range.
In 2006, we visited Areas of Samburu, Isiolo, Meru, Laikipia, Marsabit, Kajiado, Narok, Garissa, and Taita Taveta. By the end of 2006, we had travelled more than 20,000 km! We gathered occurrence records from KWS, and had more than 1000 field data points to sort and process. We were on the road for more than 100 days.

We realized that our base in Nakuru would not support free ranging cheetahs again, and began making plans to shift our operations to Makueni, where the collared cheetah was still being monitored. In the middle of 2006, we shifted from our office base base in Nakuru to a rental property in Nairobi where we would be more central to the National Survey and to our field work in Makueni.
