Among the many plants found in the drylands of northern Kenya, the desert rose stands out for its striking beauty. Its vibrant flowers easily capture attention, making it one of the most admired plants in the landscape.

Yet, according to Samburu indigenous knowledge, the desert rose also serves as a powerful reminder that beauty can conceal danger. Samburu elders have long used the plant as a teaching example, reminding younger generations that not everything attractive is safe or beneficial.

This wisdom reflects the deep connection between people and nature, where plants, animals, and landscapes are not only resources but also sources of valuable life lessons.

Traditional knowledge continues to play an important role in helping communities understand and live sustainably within their environment.

Today, we recognize the importance of restoring degraded landscapes and building resilience in communities affected by drought and desertification.

In Samburu County, grass bunching and dryland restoration initiatives are helping to reverse soil degradation, improve rangeland health, and reduce competition over scarce natural resources. Led by local communities, women's groups, and conservation partners, these efforts are restoring vital grazing areas while strengthening livelihoods for pastoralist families.

Healthy rangelands support livestock, wildlife, and the people who depend on them. By investing in land restoration today, we are creating a more sustainable and resilient future for generations to come.

Together, we can turn degraded land into thriving ecosystems.

Last month, Samuel (Field Officer) proudly represented Action for Cheetahs in Kenya (ACK) at a Village-Based Committee (VBC) meeting held at Lmoolii Field by Meibae Conservancy and Grevyโ€™s Zebra Trust. The meeting brought together community members to discuss sustainable conservation practices and resource management during both wet and dry seasons.

Samuel highlighted the importance of community participation in protecting wildlife, especially cheetahs, and encouraged local residents to continue playing an active role in safeguarding the future of conservation in Meibae Conservancy.

Together, we can ensure a thriving future for both people and wildlife.

Our Boma Light monitoring interviews are still ongoing as we continue gathering valuable feedback from participating households and communities.

The information collected helps us better understand how solar-powered boma lights are contributing to the reduction of human-wildlife conflict (HWC) by deterring predators from approaching livestock enclosures at night. Improved livestock security means fewer losses for pastoralists and greater tolerance for wildlife living alongside communities.

These interviews are an important part of measuring the impact of the project and identifying opportunities to strengthen coexistence between people and wildlife.

Together, we are working toward safer bomas, protected livelihoods, and a future where communities and wildlife thrive side by side.

Next month, we will begin our Ginger's Hope vaccination and sterilization campaign, an important initiative aimed at improving the health and welfare of domestic dogs while supporting wildlife conservation.

Before the campaign begins, we will be conducting community sensitization sessions. These sessions are a critical first step, helping community members understand the benefits of vaccination and sterilization, addressing concerns, and ensuring informed participation.

Sensitization helps build trust, encourages responsible pet ownership, and increases awareness about disease prevention. Healthy, well-managed dog populations benefit both communities and wildlife by reducing the spread of diseases and promoting safer coexistence between people, domestic animals, and wild carnivores.

We look forward to engaging with communities in the coming weeks as we prepare for a successful campaign.

Aldina; Education and Outreach Officer, together with Lentaam, Senior Field and Community Liaison Officer, recently led Colorado State University (CSU) students on an engaging field excursion.

The visit offered students a first-hand look at conservation work on the ground, and the collaborative efforts that support wildlife protection and coexistence. Through guided learning and open discussions, the students gained valuable insight into how research and community partnerships come together in real conservation settings.

ACK continues to strengthen learning opportunities by connecting academic programs with practical field experience, helping build the next generation of conservation leaders.
