Press statement:
Police Reforms Working Group Kenya strongly condemns the actions of the National Police Service that led to the deaths of two Kenyans, injuries to several others, and the arbitrary arrest of 36 protesters.

Our deepest condolences go to the bereaved families.

Kenya must not become an offshore risk-containment zone while democratic institutions and constitutional safeguards are undermined.

We call on all Kenyans, civil society, and international partners to stand against impunity and demand respect for judicial processes, human rights, and constitutional governance.

IMLU led discussions on police accountability following a series of regional sensitization forums on the use of specimen charge sheets in torture-related cases. In collaboration with IJM Kenya, MIDRIFT HURINET, Legal Resources Foundation Trust Kenya, and the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the forum advanced conversations on the outcomes of the process and reviewed progress made on commitments by the
Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions Kenya, Independent Policing Oversight Authority, Internal Affairs Unit, Directorate of Criminal Investigations, and the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights to strengthen investigations into human rights violations and generate concrete evidence that meets the judicial threshold for successful prosecution.

The evaluation forum also provided an opportunity to identify gaps and challenges that continue to hinder police accountability for human rights violations in the country, while generating practical recommendations to inform upcoming forums in the North Eastern, Eastern, and Nairobi regions.

IMLU, in collaboration with the Morticians and Allied Professionals Association of Kenya - MAPAKe, conducted a three-day training on the integration of forensic science in the management of morgues and human remains, bringing together mortuary practitioners, public health officers, and police officers.

The training sought to strengthen professionalism, accountability, documentation, and rights-based handling of human remains through improved forensic practices and inter-agency collaboration.
