UNDSS - Kenya provides leadership, operational support and oversight of the UN Security Management System to enable the most safest and efficient conduct of UN programmes and activities in Kenya. UNDSS-Kenya was established in 1976 as the Security and Safety Service of the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) shortly after the signing of the Host Country agreement with the United Nations to ho
st the UN Environment Programme in Nairobi. Since then, it has expanded its mandate to include regional security coordination operations throughout Kenya, in addition to its original mission of securing the UN Gigiri Complex. UNDSS-Kenya is headed by Peter Marshall, who serves as the Chief Security Officer for the Security and Safety Service (SSS) and the Chief Security Adviser to the Director-General, UNON and Designated Official (DO) in Kenya, Ms. The Security and Safety Service (SSS) is the Uniformed Section of UNDSS-Kenya, comprised of approximately 150 armed UN Security Officers (all UN staff, not contracted guards) who are from a variety of backgrounds and training. Under the Deputy Chief Security Officer, SSS is primarily responsible for the provision of security, safety and fire prevention services for the protection of persons and property in the UN Gigiri Complex. The Division of Regional Operations (DRO) is responsible for coordinating safety and security measures for UN staff operating outside the UN Gigiri Complex. Under the Deputy Chief Security Adviser, three Field Security Coordination Officers (FCSOs) provide safety and security coordination for UN operations and staff in the Nairobi, Garissa, and Kakuma areas. The Security Information and Operations Center (SIOC), collects and analyzes security-related information to be disseminated in the UNDSS-Kenya Weekly Security Advisories, as well as provide support for the FSCOs in terms of additional resources and communications.
