Pamoja Trust held the Nakuru East Sub County grassroots town hall with city government representatives, focused on community strategic planning.

Each ward shared its development challenges and named the specific projects it wants delivered. City government officials set out the projects already in the pipeline for the wards, and briefed participants on projects envisioned under the Nakuru City ISUDP and the storm water management master plan. They also recorded the interventions the communities proposed.

The town hall showed why people-led planning matters. When residents and government sit in the same room, community priorities can shape what gets planned.

On 9 and 10 September, Pamoja Trust took part in a workshop convened by the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights, on behalf of the State Department for Justice, Human Rights and Constitutional Affairs. The subject was the review of Kenya's National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights.

The current plan, adopted as Sessional Paper No. 3 of 2021, covers 2021–2025. Participants looked at what it has delivered and where it fell short. Uneven awareness, limited resources, coordination gaps and slow uptake among smaller businesses all came up. Groups then worked on land, environment and climate, labour, technology and the state-business nexus to shape what the next plan should address.

The land and natural resources theme sits closest to our work. Land acquisition, displacement, resettlement, consent, compensation and access to remedy are issues the communities we work with face directly, and they hold evidence that national policy needs. We will look to keep bringing that evidence, and county-level experience, into the review.

Nakuru West residents sat across the table from the people who plan their city.

At a grassroots town hall convened by Pamoja Trust, ward representatives laid out their development challenges and proposed their own interventions. Officials from the Nakuru City and County Government departments of planning, environment, and economics and planning listened, along with Nawasco. Together they worked through the emerging issues.

Residents also left with a clearer picture of who does what in county government. Knowing which office holds which mandate is the first step to taking a problem to the right door.

Pamoja Trust held a town hall meeting with Njoro communities on the sub county's community strategic plans. The Njoro sub county administrator, sub county planner, environment, agriculture, health and education officers, the local engineer and the area chief attended.

The forum presented the community's roadmap for developing ward-level plans. It also highlighted the steps county offices have taken so far toward the vision of the five-year plans.

The county officers praised the community's efforts and proposed next steps for full implementation. One proposal is for the county to adopt the plans as county policy documents. That would let them shape the fourth-generation CIDP and the municipality and township efforts in the sub county.

Pamoja Trust convened a joint sensitization session with the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) for human rights defenders (HRDs) in Kisumu. The session covered the roles and mandates of KNCHR.

Participants also mapped out the advocacy issues they will pursue in Kisumu. The session then walked them through the pathways open to them, from national strategies to international advocacy.

Pamoja Trust met with Alternative Justice Systems (AJS) champions in Kisumu. The session focused on strengthening their skills in resolving disputes.

Together with the champions, the team also mapped out a roadmap for continued technical support. It covers land disputes as well as criminal and civil cases.

Pamoja Trust facilitated a workshop that brought refugee-led organisations and host Community Based Organisations together to shape how the TVET Bill 2025 treats refugees in Nairobi. The workshop was aimed at the Nairobi City County Government (NCCG) TVET Directorate and the county assembly, the two bodies that will decide how the Bill is shaped and carried out.

Participants left with a memorandum. It sets out where refugee concerns and representation can be built into the way TVET institutions are managed and administered, how refugee enrollment can be made workable, and how funding can reach refugee youths who want to move into higher learning in Nairobi

The three areas in the memorandum are:
Management and administration: a seat at the table for refugee voices where TVET decisions are made.
Enrollment: clear routes for refugee learners to join TVET institutions.
Funding: support that helps refugee youths access higher learning opportunities in the city.

Refugee-led and host community organisations worked on the memorandum jointly. The workshop treated TVET as a shared county service, not a refugee issue sitting apart from the needs of host communities.

The memorandum now goes to the NCCG TVET Directorate and the county assembly. Pamoja Trust will keep supporting the organisations behind it as the Bill moves forward.

What does it take to build solutions that protect people, not just solve problems?

At the , 65 students from universities across Kenya are tackling real business and human rights challenges and turning them into solutions.

Led by the CEPCJofficial with DanChurchAid Kenya and Pamoja Trust, the hackathon is part of the Cultivating Justice project, which promotes responsible business conduct in Kenya's agribusiness sector.

Our first panel, “Embedding Business and Human Rights in University Curriculum,” explored what the next generation of professionals needs to learn before they take these challenges into the real world.

From interdisciplinary learning to industry collaboration, the conversation is asking an important question: How do we equip students to build solutions that work for businesses while protecting people’s rights?

Will the student innovators build their solutions with this in mind? Today, we find out.
