Pamoja Trust hosted a breakout session on Cultivating Justice in the Agribusiness Sector together with partners Centre for Education Policy and Climate Justice (CEPCJ) and DanChurchAid Kenya during the East & Horn of Africa Business and Human Rights Dialogue.

The session brought together practitioners, civil society actors, businesses and development partners to examine how human rights due diligence can be applied in practice to promote equitable and sustainable outcomes within agribusiness value chains.

Discussions explored approaches to strengthening community engagement, addressing human rights risks, improving access to remedy and fostering more meaningful participation of affected communities in decisions that shape their lives and livelihoods. Participants also reflected on practical tools and emerging models that can help advance accountability, shared value and responsible business conduct across land-based investments.

As agribusiness continues to play a significant role in the regionโ€™s economic development, ensuring that growth is grounded in human rights, inclusion and justice remains essential.

One week to go until the East & Horn of Africa Business and Human Rights Dialogue!

This year's dialogue will take stock of progress in the adoption and implementation of Business and Human Rights frameworks across the region, with discussions focused on strengthening accountability, improving access to remedy and promoting respect for human rights in business operations.

Through plenary sessions and country caucuses, participants will explore National Action Plans, policy developments, trade frameworks, and practical approaches to human rights due diligence. The dialogue will also examine sector-specific risks, particularly within land-based investments and highlight models that foster positive social impact and inclusive development.

For Pamoja Trust, these conversations are closely linked to our work on business and human rights, equitable land governance, social safeguards and the protection of vulnerable communities. We look forward to contributing to regional efforts aimed at promoting responsible business conduct and inclusive development outcomes.

Pamoja Trust was proud to join partners, government representatives, caregivers, advocates, and development actors at the launch of the Nairobi State of Care Report 2026 and the Toolkit for Care Mainstreaming in Planning and Budgeting.

As part of the working group that contributed to the development of the report, Pamoja Trust submitted perspectives drawn from our work on refugee inclusion, community organising, urban informality, housing justice, social protection, and participatory governance.

The report is an important step toward recognising care as a critical pillar in building inclusive, equitable, and people-centred cities. It also highlights the need for stronger investment, coordination, and policy action across sectors supporting childcare, disability inclusion, migrant and refugee communities, care for older persons, domestic workers, and other vulnerable groups.

We commend the City County Government, Wow Mom Kenya, Oxfam Kenya, Youth Alive! Kenya, COVAW KENYA , Metropolis, World Association of the Major Metropolises and all partners involved for convening this important process and advancing conversations on care within planning and budgeting systems.

At Pamoja Trust, we remain committed to contributing to urban policies and systems that place dignity, inclusion and community wellbeing at the centre of development.

The Second Africa Urban Forum (AUF2) convened in Nairobi, Kenya, concluded after three days of engagements focused on advancing the โ€œAdequate Housing for Allโ€ agenda within Africaโ€™s urban context. The Forum served as a key moment for aligning continental priorities on housing, infrastructure, and inclusive city development.

The Africa Urban Forum, convened by the African Union, is a key platform for advancing sustainable urban development across Africa. Rooted in Agenda 2063 and the 2022 Cairo Declaration, AUF2 focused strongly on โ€œAdequate Housing for Allโ€ and on positioning housing as a driver of economic transformation, climate resilience, and social justice. The expected outcome of the forum is the AUF2 Nairobi Declaration, which will help shape Africaโ€™s shared priorities and inform engagement at the upcoming World Urban Forum.

Deliberations throughout the Forum examined the need to scale affordable housing, strengthen land governance systems, enhance climate resilience, and foster partnerships that support implementation. There was sustained recognition of the role of communities in co-producing urban solutions, particularly in informal settlements where housing deficits remain most acute.

Pamoja Trust engaged across the Forum, sharing practical experiences from informal settlements on community-led housing models, land governance and participatory planning that centre urban vulnerable communities.

The AUF2 Declaration, presented at the close, captures these priorities while highlighting commitments to expand affordable housing, advance community-based housing development and integrate housing responses within climate action frameworks.

The Forum outcomes show a shared direction towards inclusive, resilient and people-centred urban development across Africa.
