Kibera/ Kangemi Food Supplementation program
Because the Human Immunodeficiency Virus/ Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (HIV/AIDS) predominantly attacks people of childbearing age, its impact on children, extended families, and communities is devastating. When a parent dies of AIDS, his or her child is three times more likely to die – even when that child is HIV negative. Besides facing an increased risk of death, children whose parents have died due to HIV/AIDS also confront stigmatization, rejection and a lack of love and care. They often suffer from emotional distress, malnutrition, a lack of health care, and poor or no access to education. AIDS orphans are also at high risk for labor exploitation, s*x trafficking, homelessness, and exposure to HIV. Increasingly, extended families and communities in highly affected areas find that their resources are inadequate to provide the basics for all needy children. In slum communities hard hit by the double hammer of HIV/AIDS and poverty, there are millions of children who may not be orphans, but who have been made more vulnerable by HIV/AIDS. Children whose parents are ill with HIV/AIDS might not receive the care and support they require. In extreme cases, roles in the household may be reversed and the children may become their parents’ caregivers, often dropping out of school and becoming the breadwinner. Research indicates that these children, caring for sick and dying parents, are the most vulnerable of all. The most straightforward way to meet the needs of vulnerable children is to keep their parents alive and well and thus prevent the children from becoming orphans. Qty Foundation through its nutritional supplementation program seeks to address this problem. It is utilized as a mobilizing instrument to get music artists and their fans and well wishers to contribute to improving the lives of families in Kibera and Kangemi affected or infected with HIV/AIDS through contribution of foodstuffs, toiletries and social care by interacting with them. Condom distribution
Though condoms are readily available at major health centres, their use in the slum areas is very minimal. The main cause of this is education on correct use and lack of adequate access to supply of condoms. Through its condom distribution program Qty Foundation takes advantage of its network of celebrity musicians and community volunteers to educate and distribute free condoms youth through forums for youth and women utilizing celebrity guests to attract them to venues. This method ensures effective pe*******on of condoms in these areas and thus encourage its use. Celebrity Outreach Program
Qty Foundations celebrity outreach program brings together celebrity personalities from different backgrounds including music, television, corporate world and NGO world in an effort to reach the youth and community stakeholders in the “language” they best understand and can relate to. It also serves as a forum for encouragement to those living with HIV/AIDS to pursue life to the fullest without letting the ailment to put them down. Celebrity Outreach Programs have proved to be very effective forums for bringing youth together and inspiring behavioral change especially in condom use. QTY’s STORY
