Led by our esteemed Chairman, Hon. Godana Doyo, alongside Committee Member Mr. Otumoi Nairuko and Administrator Mr. Rodney Omari, we joined the Senate Committee on Lands, Environment and Natural Resources, chaired by Sen. Mohamed Faki, on a fact-finding mission in Kakamega County following a petition concerning the proposed underground mining project by Shanta Gold Kenya Limited in Isulu-Bushiangala.

The visit forms part of the Senate Committee’s oversight and public participation mandate, aimed at assessing the concerns raised in the petition, engaging relevant stakeholders, and gathering firsthand information on the proposed project. The exercise provided an opportunity for the Committee to gain a deeper understanding of the environmental, social, and economic implications of the project, which will inform its deliberations and subsequent recommendations.

ESERTIFICATION AND DROUGHT DAY 2026 COMMEMORATED IN KILIFI COUNTY

The global observance of Desertification and Drought Day 2026 was held at Vipingo Central Primary School in Kilifi County, bringing together local and international dignitaries in a vibrant and colourful celebration.

This year’s theme, “Rangelands: Recognize. Respect. Restore.”, underscored the critical role of rangelands in enhancing climate resilience, strengthening food and water security, conserving biodiversity, and sustaining the cultural heritage and livelihoods of pastoralist and Indigenous communities across the globe.

The event was graced by the Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya, H.E. Prof. Kithure Kindiki, E.G.H., who served as the Chief Guest. In his address, the Deputy President called upon Kenyans to move beyond commitments and translate environmental conservation efforts into tangible action, particularly in the protection and restoration of rangelands as a strategy to mitigate the impacts of climate change. He further commended the ongoing 15 Billion Tree Growing Programme, noting its significance in restoring ecosystems and safeguarding rangelands across the country.

Additional remarks were delivered virtually by H.E. António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, as well as Ambassador Alexander Fierley, Deputy Head of Mission, speaking on behalf of the Diplomatic Community, and the Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, Dr. Deborah Barasa.

NECC was represented by Chairman Hon. Godana Doyo, Committee Secretary Ms. Mary Njogu, and Committee Members Mr. Ernest Kioko, HSC, Mr. William Nairuko, and Eng. Stephen Muli, who joined other stakeholders in reaffirming Kenya’s commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable land management.
