🐥 FIRST 7 DAYS CHICK MANAGEMENT GUIDE 🐥

For Improved Kienyeji/Kuroiler Chicks
Congratulations on bringing home your chicks! 🎉 Proper care during the first week is critical for good growth, survival and future productivity.
🔥 1. BROODING & WARMTH
Prepare the brooder before the chicks arrive.
Maintain approximately 32–35°C at chick level during the first week.
Protect chicks from cold drafts, rain and extreme temperatures.
Observe their behaviour: if they crowd together, they may be cold; if they move far away from the heat source, they may be too hot.
Reduce the temperature gradually as the chicks grow.
💧 2. CLEAN DRINKING WATER
Provide clean, safe drinking water at all times.
Clean drinkers every day.
On arrival, give chicks access to water before feeding.
Avoid contaminated or very cold water.
🌾 3. FEEDING
Provide a good-quality chick starter feed.
Feed should be available throughout the day.
Keep feeders clean and dry.
Do not suddenly change the type of feed.
Avoid feeding mouldy or contaminated feed.
🧹 4. HYGIENE
Keep the brooder clean and dry.
Use clean, dry bedding such as wood shavings.
Remove wet or contaminated litter immediately.
Clean feeders and drinkers regularly.
Limit unnecessary visitors and handling to reduce disease risk.
🐣 5. SPACE & VENTILATION
Avoid overcrowding.
Ensure adequate ventilation without exposing chicks to cold drafts.
Provide enough feeders and drinkers so that all chicks can access them easily.
💉 6. VACCINATION Follow a vaccination programme recommended by a qualified poultry veterinarian or livestock officer. Vaccination schedules can vary depending on the area, disease risks and the hatchery's programme.
📋 7. DAILY CHECK Every morning and evening, check: ✅ Are the chicks eating?
✅ Are they drinking?
✅ Are they active?
✅ Are they evenly distributed around the brooder?
✅ Is the litter dry?
✅ Are there any sick or weak chicks?
✅ Is there unusual mortality?
🚨 IMPORTANT: If chicks show signs of illness, unusual weakness, difficulty breathing, severe diarrhoea or increased mortality, seek advice from a qualified veterinary professional promptly. Avoid giving antibiotics or other medicines without professional guidance.
