Today was more than an advocacy day at the California State Capitol.
It was a day of courage.
A day of storytelling.
A day of survivors, caregivers, advocates, and women refusing to stay silent.
Limau Cancer Connection proudly stood alongside G. Komen and breast cancer advocates from across California to fight for policies that save lives.
Throughout the day, we met with legislators, chiefs of staff, fellows, and policy teams to advocate for:
💗 AB 1570 — to eliminate out-of-pocket costs for medically necessary diagnostic breast imaging after abnormal mammograms
💗 Protection and continued funding for the Every Woman Counts Program — a critical lifeline for uninsured and underinsured women
We shared stories of:
- mothers lost too soon
- women carrying BRCA mutations
- survivors enduring chemotherapy, radiation, and double mastectomies
- young women diagnosed in their 30s and 40s
- immigrant women navigating healthcare barriers alone
- families devastated by delayed diagnosis because of cost
One message echoed through every meeting:
Early detection only works if patients can afford the next step.
Our final meeting of the day with Stephanie Nguyen’s office ended on a powerful and hopeful note. Stephanie was deeply compassionate, engaged in the conversation around breast cancer awareness and prevention, and agreed to support both advocacy priorities after hearing the stories shared by survivors and advocates in the room.
As someone who lost my mother to breast cancer and transformed grief into advocacy, today reminded me why Limau exists:
To make sure no woman feels invisible in her fight.
From Kenya to California, Limau continues building bridges of hope, awareness, dignity, and advocacy for women and families affected by breast cancer.
Thank you to G. Komen and Susan G. Komen for empowering advocates to turn pain into policy change.
Today, our voices were heard.
And this movement is only growing stronger.
