WHAT WE SEE...AND WHAT WE DON'T

Whenever we at eMentoring Africa hold mentorship events or bootcamps, we are happy when the room is full of laughter, talent and energy as the young people enjoy the activities of the day.

But as a mentor, I look beyond the visible, especially when we pose the question: “What holds you back?”

Then we feel the quiet in the room - the kind of silence that says more than words. Truth is, many young people carry things we don’t often see. Data shows that in Kenya today, 6 out of 10 young people report struggling with mental health challenges. Some studies show up to 30–37% of adolescents experience depression symptoms. Yet over 75% do not have access to care or support.

Yes, these same young people struggling often sit in rooms smiling and participating. But they are bottling up and holding things back.

As the month of May unfolds, I invite mentors to share realities of what they see during mentorship conversations. How do you prod deeper to identify the underlying issues?

Let us be the ‘safe space’ our young people are looking for.

If you are a mentor, parent, or young person…
Let’s walk together this May.

THE QUIET COMPARISON

Some days it feels like everyone else is moving…
Except you.

- You grew up in the same neighborhood.
- You went to the same school.
- You selected the same career pathway.

But somehow, their 🚪 doors open faster.

And you wonder… what am I missing?

Maybe nothing.
Maybe your journey is just… slower, deeper, unseen. And you are getting to your goal. Just at a slower pace, different route🚶🏿

Let's walk together… we will figure it out.

SELLING YOURSELF

You have the college papers.
You have the general knowledge.
You even have practical skills.

But when it comes to speaking about yourself…

You freeze.

No one taught you how to show your value.
And yet, the world expects it.

Confidence is a skill… not a personality. Gaining it takes time. The art of selling is a skill you must learn. Slowly. Just don't give up

One day - you will stand. Tall. Confident. Selling your value. And getting the reward.

Walk with us eMentoring Africa… we will figure it out.

THE QUIET ONES

The world celebrates the bold.

But not everyone is loud.

Some people are thoughtful… observant… quiet.

And they wonder if that is a weakness.

IT IS NOT!

You don’t have to become loud.

You just need to become clear.

Walk with us EMentoring Africa… we will figure it out.

Yesterday's eMentoring Africa Mentorship Day for Lady Hope Wellness Institute at St Catherine of Siena, Kitisuru, was a very interactive day.

The event kicked off with arrival and check-in, an opening prayer by Fr. Martin, welcomes from Lady Hope & eMentoring Africa, Dream Wall activity where participants shared dreams/strengths on sticky notes, powerful 'Bridge Out' circle reflections—"What holds me back?" vs "What helps me forward?"—tea break networking, Magnificent Seven Mentors (M7M) keynote on resilience & growth, a stellar talent showcase including Lorenzo ALulu's soul-stirring spoken word 'Rooted to Rise' with this powerful stanza:

"They told me
'Be realistic'
'Don't dream too big'
But how do you silence something
That was never meant to be small?
One day...
They will see the tree
But they will never understand
The storm it survived
But I know when I chose to grow
I shall rise like the tree."

We had Breakout group session circles across five groups (four age-based groups for Lady Hope children and youth, one for parents), followed by lunch, then a powerful combined session where two representatives from each group shared breakout reflections and daily takeaways. The day wrapped with team challenges, closing remarks, and a song by Lady Hope as we took group photos.

We sparked hope in Lady Hope Wellness Institute children and youth. Grateful for our partner and host Lady Hope Wellness Institute Veronica Njoroge, eMentoring Africa's CEO Esther Muchiri for organizing such an impactful mentorship day, and our facilitators: Wafula Luasi NABUTOLA, Angela Waithaka, Lorenzo Alulu, Josiah Lekartiwa & Nancy Kibicho and the parents from Lady Hope who joined us and had parallel sessions.

STARTING BEHIND

Some people don’t start from zero.

They start from less than zero.

No resources.
No guidance.
No soft landing.

And yet… they show up.

If that’s your story, let us assure you:

You are not behind.
You are building from a different ground.

Mentorship in Action

“I am really proud of my mentee and the growth he is showing… from leading his group to confidently delegating responsibilities. A first-year student stepping up to coach a classmate — that is real leadership in action.” ~ Evelyn Wanjiku, Mentor

At eMentoring Africa, these are the stories that keep us going 💡
Real growth. Real leadership. Real impact.

When young people are guided, supported, and believed in, they rise and they lift others along the way.

Join us in transforming minds and nurturing the next generation of leaders.

THE FALL

You try. You push. You go all in.
Then you fall. Hard.

Not once. Not twice…

And people start to wonder.

Even YOU start to wonder.
But maybe falling is not failure.

Maybe it is feedback… just not the kind we like.
Still getting up. Still walking. Still believing.

Walk with us… we will figure it out.

eMentoring Africa Team, Josiah Lekartiwa and Lorenzo Alulu had the privilege of visiting Ajax Rockcity in Mathare on 18th April 2026.

This was not just another outreach activity, it was a meaningful engagement with young minds, using storytelling, music, and interactive games to create an atmosphere filled with energy, curiosity, and inspiration.

The highlight was the story of Dr. Ben Carson, author of "Think Big and Gifted Hands." They shared how he struggled academically as a young boy, often labeled as the “worst student in class,” yet rose to become one of the world’s most respected neurosurgeons. His transformation was fueled by discipline, determination, and reading.

This inspired the learners—children leaned in, eyes lit up: “If he could do it, maybe I can too.” Lorenzo's music and games built confidence and belonging.

These moments plant seeds of vision and purpose. eMentoring Africa: breaking barriers, opening doors of possibility. It is about transformation through mentorship!

BECOMING

Many times we think becoming is a straight line.

Now we KNOW it is MVIRINGO (circle)…
we return to things.
we relearn.
we start again—but differently.

Maybe that is growth
Not moving forward all the time…
but deepening.

In mentorship, we rise. Walk with us… we will figure it out
