Every outbreak starts in a community.
Long before laboratories confirm a diagnosis, before emergency teams mobilise, and before the world pays attention, communities are often the first to see the warning signs.

In his latest article published by SciDev.Net, Dr Githinji Gitahi explains why the current Ebola outbreak is a reminder that community trust, early detection, and strong community health systems remain our best defence against future health emergencies.

"The next outbreak is not a question of if, but when. The time to strengthen trusted community systems is now."

Today, on World , we celebrate the power of youth-led innovation to transform lives.

In Zambia, social entrepreneur Mwinji Nakamba is turning plastic waste into reusable menstrual health products through WasteMat Zambia, helping girls access affordable menstrual products while creating dignified work opportunities for women and young people.

Supported through the Africa Health Collaborative project implemented by Amref Health Africa in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, her work is improving health, reducing environmental waste, and building stronger communities.

This is a powerful example of how young Africans are creating solutions that advance health, dignity, and opportunity.

“The world cannot be safe if Africa is not safe.”

As the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda continues to increase risks across neighbouring countries and the world, Amref Health Africa is calling for stronger collaboration, preparedness, and sustained investment in health security systems before the crisis escalates further.

From community surveillance and trusted risk communication to frontline health workers and cross-border preparedness, early action remains critical in preventing outbreaks from becoming wider regional emergencies.

Innovative and sustainable financing is the backbone of strong primary health care. Social health insurance (SHI) is emerging as a game changer in the journey toward Universal Health Coverage (UHC). By pooling risks, expanding coverage, and mobilising domestic resources, SHI can shift countries from fragmented, out-of-pocket spending to equitable, predictable, and people-centred health financing systems. Success depends on smart design, including the inclusion of informal-sector populations, strategic purchasing, accountability, and alignment with national health priorities. As countries face rising health demands, fiscal constraints, and evolving disease burdens, the question is no longer whether to adopt SHI but how to make it efficient, inclusive, and sustainable at scale.

Join the conversation at as we explore how innovative financing models can unlock stronger, more resilient primary health care systems and accelerate progress toward UHC.
