Living with Sickle Cell Disease goes far beyond physical pain.
The emotional weight — the fatigue, uncertainty, silent struggles, and feeling misunderstood — can deeply affect mental well-being.

That’s why mental health support is not optional in SCD care…
It is care.

Let’s continue creating spaces of understanding, compassion, healing, and hope for everyone living with SCD.

Together, we protect peace, nurture resilience, and uplift every journey

Happy Weekend from all of us at the Joanne Chazima Sickle Cell Foundation.

To everyone living with sickle cell — the warriors who push through pain, fatigue, and uncertainty every single day — this weekend, we hope you get to rest, laugh, and simply be. Not just strong. Happy.

To the caregivers, the parents, the siblings, and the friends who show up without being asked — thank you. Your love is part of the treatment.

And to everyone else, use this weekend to check in on someone you love. A phone call, a visit, a kind word — it costs nothing but means everything.

You deserve joy, not just survival.

I hope you find time to be happy and not just strong.

Wishing you a peaceful, restful, and joy-filled weekend.

Good things happen when you have the right information.

Imagine a child who is screened at birth, starts treatment early, and grows up knowing exactly how to take care of their body. Imagine a family that walks into a doctor's office with confidence, asking the right questions and getting the right answers. That is not a dream — that is what daily management of sickle cell disease makes possible.

When newborns are screened early, families gain a head start. When immunizations are kept up to date, the body is protected and strong. When medications like Hydroxyurea are understood and used correctly, pain crises become fewer, hospital visits become less frequent, and life opens up in ways it never did before.

This is what good care looks like. This is what awareness makes possible.

Every person living with sickle cell deserves to wake up each morning with a plan, a support system, and the confidence that comes from truly understanding their condition. That kind of clarity changes everything — for the patient, for the family, and for the community.

We are here to walk that journey with you.

Every year, 240,000 babies across Africa are born fighting a battle they didn't choose — Sickle Cell Disease. 6,000 of them are Kenyan.

Sickle cell is not just a statistic. It's a child who wakes up in pain. It's a family that spends more time in hospitals than at home. It's a life that deserves better — better awareness, better care, and better support.

Yet so many people still don't know they carry the trait. A simple test can change everything.

Know your status. Know your partner's status.

Together, we can reduce the number of children born into this struggle. Share this post, start a conversation, and be part of the change.

Swipe to learn more about sickle cell, how it affects our communities, and what YOU can do today.

Let's talk iron!

Your body needs iron to make hemoglobin – the protein that carries oxygen in your blood. When you're low on iron, you might feel tired, weak, or get sick more easily.
Boost your iron intake with:

Dark leafy greens
Beans and lentils
Lean meats
Nuts and seeds

Pair iron-rich foods with vitamin C for better absorption!

For our sickle cell warriors: Always consult your doctor about iron supplementation, as individual needs vary.

Knowledge is power. Health is wealth.

Did you know that what you eat can help support your body's natural strength?
These iron-rich foods - beet roots, leafy greens, red meat, lentils, and beans - are nature's way of helping you feel your best. Pro tip: Pair them with vitamin C foods like oranges or tomatoes to boost absorption.
At Joanne Chazima Sickle Cell Foundation, we're here to empower our community with knowledge that makes a difference. Together, we're building healthier lives.
