This week, GESCI in partnership with the African Union's Pan-African Institute for Education for Development (AUIPED) conducted a comprehensive Education Management Information Systems-EMIS consultation and capacity strengthening mission in South Sudan.
The engagement brought together Ministry of General Education and Instruction officials across planning, ICT, and statistics to strengthen national education data systems. Through technical consultations and hands-on workshops, key priorities emerged—including improving data quality, strengthening governance frameworks, enhancing ICT infrastructure, and building sustainable in-country technical capacity.
A field visit to schools in Juba further grounded these discussions in reality, revealing both the resilience of education systems and the challenges faced at the point of delivery—from overcrowded classrooms and teacher shortages to largely manual data systems.
The three-day activity saw the validation of a costed national EMIS action plan, designed to support evidence-based planning, strengthen coordination across partners, and ensure long-term system sustainability.
This collaboration is made possible through support from the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) under the Global Partnership for Education Knowledge and Innovation Exchange Programme, reflecting a shared commitment to advancing data-driven education systems across Africa, aligned with Agenda 2063 and SDG 4.
