Period-shame is rooted in gender inequality.

Many cultural and religious beliefs about periods come from discriminatory ideas about the role and value of girls in society.

It is critical that education about periods starts early and includes all genders, to tackle taboos and stigma, and promote gender equality.

On this Menstrual Hygiene Day, we spoke with our programme leads from Turkana, Kajiado, Kilifi and Kisumu, alongside our partners and staff in Kwale and our SRHR advisor, to reflect on the importance of menstrual health and hygiene management.

One message stood out clearly: no girl or young woman should face stigma, shame or discrimination because of her period. Meaningful conversations on menstrual health must also include boys and men as allies in creating supportive, informed and dignified communities.

At Plan International Kenya, we reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that girls and young women have access to opportunities, education and the support they need to manage menstruation with dignity, confidence and without barriers.

Menstrual Hygiene Day is observed annually on 28 May to raise awareness on the importance of menstrual health and hygiene management for all women and girls.

The day calls for collective action to break stigma, challenge harmful silence and advance access to menstrual products, accurate information and safe, hygienic facilities.

This year, we are amplifying the voices of programme participants, staff and partners across our areas of work as they share how menstrual health and hygiene interventions are supporting girls to stay in school, protect their wellbeing and live with dignity and confidence.

At Plan International Kenya, we remain committed to advancing girls’ rights and ensuring that no girl is left behind because of her period.

What happens when girls are given the tools to code, create, lead and shape AI solutions? They don’t just imagine the future, they build it.

This year’s Girls in ICT day was a unique blend of a hybrid 2 day hackathon and a physical event ceremony at Konza Technopolis.

The event brought together 50 girls and young women on a powerful innovation journey, where they were able to join different sub groups to identify real community challenges to designing AI driven solutions guided by mentors and driven by their lived experiences.

Through mentorship from experts including support from the Africa Girls Can Code Initiative, the participating girls were able to build prototypes and pitch solutions with confidence and clarity.

The result were scalable AI innovations such as the Tulia Mum App that focuses on maternal health and providing supporting to expectant mothers and those experiencing postpartum depression.

Plan International Kenya was honored to partner with the African Centre for Technology Studies, UN Women, the Green and Digital Innovation Hub, Microsoft, UNEP, Women in Technology and Innovation in Africa, Strathmore University through its Africa Media Hub and PC Kinyanjui Technical Training Institute to make this initiative possible.
