Josephine Kanini Mutiso, a 50-year-old Farmer Service Center (FSC) and farmer from Makueni, is a powerful example of how the right support can transform livelihoods. Farming five acres, she has grown from subsistence production into a thriving agribusiness, now earning three times more than what she used to earn.

Her breakthrough came after working with the Cereal Growers Association (CGA) and Christian Aid under the Promoting Climate Resilience and Productivity for Sustainable Food and Nutrition Security among Smallholder Farmers in Makueni County (PCRP) program. Through training and mentorship, Josephine shifted to market-driven farming, improved record-keeping, and adopted climate-smart practices.

Today, her diversified farm includes crops, a profitable tree nursery, fodder production, and beekeeping, creating multiple income streams and strengthening resilience to climate shocks.

Beyond her own success, Josephine is empowering other farmers in her community, proving that with the right knowledge and partnerships, smallholder farmers can build sustainable and profitable futures.

Data plays a big role in shaping decisions in any organization. Reliable information sets the foundation for making improvements that benefit both the organization and the people it serves.

This week, our Data Entry Clerks and Monitoring and Evaluation team came together in Nakuru for a refresher training. The sessions covered best practices for accurate data entry, tips for cleaning and validating datasets, and techniques for generating clear and insightful reports.

The team also explored ways to streamline workflows, enhance data security, and provide recommendations with our in-house Data Analytics System, CMIS.

Over the past four months, Cereal Growers Association (CGA), in partnership with Bayer Sub-Saharan Africa, KALRO, and AATF has hosted three roundtables bringing together farmers, lawmakers, scientists, and religious leaders for open and inclusive discussions on biotechnology. Under the tagline “Stawisha Mazao,” the first meeting in Nairobi set the stage by identifying farmers’ key areas of interest, followed by KALRO Kibiko, where participants engaged with confined demos, and now KALRO Kitale, showcasing demonstration plots of approved Bt Maize.

These trials have highlighted benefits such as higher, more predictable yields, effective pest protection against the fall armyworm, and reduced reliance on pesticide sprays, leading to lower costs, greater efficiency, and more stable incomes. Beyond these practical gains, biotechnology is grounded in rigorous scientific research, using precise genetic tools to enhance crop resilience, improve nutrient content, and adapt to the challenges of climate change.

Embracing evidence-based innovations can boost food security, cut environmental impact, and empower farmers to meet the needs of a growing population. In Kitale, we had the honor of hosting Hon. Dr. John Mutunga, MP for Tigania West and Chair of the Agricultural Committee of the National Assembly, who shared valuable insights from both his legislative role and expertise in agriculture.

The Cereal Growers Association (CGA) held its 27th Annual General Meeting (AGM) today in Nakuru, bringing together 126 farmers and stakeholders from major maize and wheat growing regions like , , , , and .

Led by CGA Chairman Stephanus Kruger, Board Secretary Anthony Kioko, and Board Members Prof. Miriam Kinyua, John Teeka, Giles Littlewood and Nahson Ngetich, the AGM served as a platform to review progress, adopt reports, and discuss pressing issues facing farmers. Key concerns included eTims challenges, high production costs, delayed input deliveries, taxation pressures, and falling wheat prices due to cheaper imports.

Farmers stressed the need for stronger advocacy, better production data, and unity through cooperatives and contract farming. The meeting also addressed emerging risks like quelea bird invasions and changing crop patterns, highlighting the value of timely farmer feedback to shape policy.

Members reaffirmed their commitment to working with CGA to tackle challenges and boost profitability for farmers.

CGA will continue to strengthen farmer capacity and champion policies that create a more enabling and competitive environment for Kenyan agriculture. Through forums such as the AGM, we not only reflect on progress but also align on practical, farmer-driven solutions to challenges around production, markets, and policy. These engagements remain critical in shaping a unified voice, guiding strategic action, and ensuring that the interests of farmers are effectively represented at all levels.

A great organization is one that truly invests in its people!

Over the past two weeks, the Cereal Growers Association (CGA), in partnership with the Farm to Market Alliance (FtMA), facilitated Business Development and Entrepreneurial Coaching (BDEC) sessions for all CGA staff. Delivered by the CropCare Technologies team, these sessions are part of CGA and FtMA’s ongoing commitment to building an efficient, informed, and knowledgeable team to better train our Farmer Service Centres (FSCs) and farmers.

This empowered team has helped CGA make a positive impact on over 2,500 FSCs across 31 counties, reaching more than 700,000 farmers. We’re growing not just on the farm, but in our knowledge too.

1.2 Million Tree Seedlings Raised in Just 8 Months

Today, the Cereal Growers Association (CGA), through the ACORN initiative, in partnership with SMACHS Foundation, Bomet Prison Service, National Youth Service (NYS), and the County Government of Bomet, officially launched the Bomet Prison Tree Nursery with over 1.2 million tree seedlings. These will be replanted across Bomet County, with a focus on rehabilitating the Chapalungu Forest.

The event was graced by SMACHS Patron Charlene Ruto, Bomet County CEC for Environment Hon. Patrick Maritim, CGA Project Manager Oswald Miriti, and Dr. Osia Mwanje, alongside local security agencies including NYS, Kenya Prisons Service, and the National Police Service.

This milestone builds on our growing impact, of which over 500,000 trees have already been planted in the last two years. With millions more in the pipeline, we are actively contributing to Kenya’s ambitious goal of planting by 2032.

Trees are central to climate action. They absorb carbon dioxide, acting as natural carbon sinks that reduce greenhouse gases, restore ecosystems, and enhance soil and water systems. Through this effort, we are advancing carbon sequestration, strengthening community resilience, and training inmates on new skills to make them easily integrate back into the community.

The Bomet Prison tree nursery stands strong to support SDG 17 (Partnerships for the goals). This commitment by prison personnel, inmates, and the CGA team, including Farmer Service Centers (FSCs) mentored under ACORN, and the initiative by the World Food Programme in Kenya, is the driving factor in ensuring a greener, more sustainable, and climate-smart environment is realized.

Let's face it, We have an uninvited guest!

Climate Change is here with us! We're witnessing unpredictable, erratic, and tougher weather conditions for our farmers. This struggle affects us all, whether in quality or quantity; you are affected one way or the other.

But what if the solution begins with the seed itself? Continued innovation in the agrispace has led us to biotechnology. Through this, we can develop high-quality seeds that help farmers achieve better harvests.

We need more solutions. Stay locked for more.

Youth unemployment remains a major challenge in rural communities, but mentorship and practical exposure are helping young people turn agriculture into a viable livelihood.

Maurice Otieno, a youthful agripreneur from K’Olale village in Siaya County, began his journey as a farmhand under Farmer Service Centre (FSC) graduate David Onyunde. While working on David’s farm, Maurice participated in mentorship sessions that helped him gain practical agribusiness knowledge and leadership experience.

Inspired by these lessons, Maurice mobilised fellow youths and formed the New Generation Youth Group. He secured one acre of riparian land in his village and applied improved farming practices, including establishing drainage furrows to make the land productive. With support from four other youths (3 male, 1 female), the group expanded their farm to 1.25 acres, planting kales and black nightshade.

Within their first month of harvesting, the group sold more than 1,000 kg of kales at KSh 40 per kg and more than 700 kg of black nightshade at KSh 55 per kg. From this, the group generated enough revenue that comfortably sustain their livelihoods.

Maurice believes that improving market access will help the enterprise grow further. He expressed interest in learning how to secure multiple markets without relying on brokers, aligning with the Smallholder Horticultural Empowerment Promotion (SHEP) approach, which emphasises identifying markets before production. The SHEP approach is being fronted by Farm to Market Alliance (FtMA) and Cereal Growers Association (CGA).

Moving forward, the group plans to onboard more youths, receive SHEP training, and undertake a learning visit to Abudo Farm for benchmarking.

Maurice’s journey demonstrates how mentorship and youth collaboration can transform agriculture into a pathway for employment and economic empowerment, a cornerstone for the FtMA program.
