Strengthening Regional Collaboration for Children’s Rights 🤝🌍

Today, we had the pleasure of hosting The Agency for Minority Rights and Development (AMARD) at our offices in Nairobi, Kenya 🇰🇪, where we explored strategic ways to collaborate in advancing children’s rights across the region.

AMARD has a strong presence in Somalia and the Horn of Africa 🌍, working to improve the lives of minority, marginalized, and vulnerable communities.

Our discussions focused on key areas of collaboration, including:

🔹 Capacity building for CSOs in Somalia on reporting processes to regional human rights bodies
🔹 Technical support to strengthen meaningful child participation in Somalia
🔹 AMARD’s engagement in regional platforms, including the CSO Forum, ACERWC Ordinary Sessions, and the EACSOF CSO Summit
🔹 Revitalizing our national coalition member in Somalia to strengthen coordinated advocacy efforts

The meeting concluded with the signing and exchange of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) ✍🏽📄, marking the beginning of a strengthened partnership dedicated to promoting and protecting the rights and well-being of children in the region

Kenya’s🇰🇪 CSOs workshop on developing a Complimentary Report to the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC)! 📝✨

This workshop presents CSOs with a chance to engage, learn, and help amplify the voices of children in Kenya🇰🇪 and Africa🌍. The workshop aims to guide CSOs through the process of drafting and submitting a strong report that complements the ACERWC’s official review of children’s rights and welfare in Kenya.

Why is this important? 🤔
A Complimentary Report ensures that CSOs present the real-life experiences of children and communities, offering a holistic view of their challenges and needs. Complimentary reports provide the Committee with additional, specific, credible and objective information that corroborates or provides alternative information to complement the report presented by the State Party.

The Eastern African Child Rights Network held its 10th Annual General Meeting and a partners reflection and learning event at Chez Land Hotel, Kigali, Rwanda, from the 25th to 27th of November 2024. The meeting was conducted in a plenary format, accommodating both virtual and physical participation.

The partners reflection and learning event plus the 10th AGM was a crucial event for the network since it served as an opportunity for members to assess the progress, impact, and sustainability of the network, reflect on the accomplishments and challenges of the past year in tackling challenges children face in accessing free, fair, and quality education, and strategize for the future.

The meeting created a platform for members to:

1) Evaluate the general progress of the network and its members, assessing challenges and strategies for mitigation for quality education in the Eastern Africa Region.

2) Share lived experiences, impacts, and good practices and come up with recommendations for education in their respective states and EAC at large

3) Improve and build capacities on emerging trends in child rights advocacy, especially on education in the Eastern Africa Region, and develop strategies for advocacy.

4) Develop accountability mechanisms on child rights issues, especially education and future reporting, to ensure this comes to realization.

5) Enhance information sharing and ownership of the network through feedback and participation of members
