Kenya Community Development Foundation KCDF is a public philanthropic foundation that supports sustainable community-driven development.

KCDF is a Kenyan development grant-making organization, founded and registered in 1997 as a public foundation, that supports communities to initiate and drive their development agenda. Formed in 1997, KCDF is the first and oldest indigenous foundation of its kind in East Africa. We work with poor, marginalized and disadvantaged communities as our primary target group and look to provide them with support in uplifting themselves from their situation through their own efforts. KCDF thus invests significant resources to build, strengthen and sustain the core capacities of these communities by developing thoughtful, long-term collaborations with other actors such as governments, non–profit organisations, the business sectors and individuals to achieve social justice.

After the launch of the Young Innovators Challenge (YIC) in August 2026, a total of 615 proposals were received. This week, KCDF team converged to review the submitted ideas through a thorough, collaborative and engaging review session.

This process is crucial for identifying top ideas that align with the YIC's mandate to identify, nurture, and scale innovative environmental solutions led by young people across Kenya.

With support from the I&M Foundation, YIC seeks to advance promising youth-led environmental innovations that can contribute to a greener, more sustainable Kenya.

Community Foundations Across Africa Convene Towards Building Lasting Local Impact

From 5 to 8 October 2026, the inaugural Africa Community Foundations Convening brought together more than 80 leaders and practitioners from community foundations, support organisations and funding partners across seven African countries in Mombasa, Kenya.

The convening provided a unique platform for participants to reflect on the growth of the community foundations movement across the continent and to explore practical ways to strengthen locally rooted institutions

The event also sought to strengthen collaboration among African community foundations, encourage peer learning, and identify shared priorities for advancing the community foundation movement beyond the convening.

URise Kenya, a civil society organisation in Kisii, set out to establish a community clinic to support people living with epilepsy in Kisii and neighbouring counties. To make this possible, they set an ambitious fundraising target of KES 1 million, with half to be raised in cash and the rest through in-kind contributions.

Through the Change the Game Academy (CtGA) training on Local Resource Mobilisation and Mobilising Support, U-Rise gained practical skills to engage their community, build support and mobilise resources around a cause that matters.

They have now met their KES 1 million target and moved into the implementation stage of the community clinic project.

This is what locally driven resource mobilisation can achieve: when communities are equipped with the right skills, they can turn ideas into action and create solutions to challenges affecting their own communities.
