Kenya Community Development Foundation KCDF is a public philanthropic foundation that supports sustainable community-driven development.

KCDF is a Kenyan development grant-making organization, founded and registered in 1997 as a public foundation, that supports communities to initiate and drive their development agenda. Formed in 1997, KCDF is the first and oldest indigenous foundation of its kind in East Africa. We work with poor, marginalized and disadvantaged communities as our primary target group and look to provide them with

support in uplifting themselves from their situation through their own efforts. KCDF thus invests significant resources to build, strengthen and sustain the core capacities of these communities by developing thoughtful, long-term collaborations with other actors such as governments, non–profit organisations, the business sectors and individuals to achieve social justice.

Do you have an idea that can help protect biodiversity, conserve natural resources and create positive environmental change in your community?

The Sowing the Seeds of Change Programme: Roots Track is inviting youth-led organisations and young environmental champions in Kenya to apply for funding to implement community-led environmental conservation initiatives.

Through the programme, successful applicants will receive:
• Up to KES 183,000 in grant funding, matched by a contribution of KES 183,000 from the applicant
• Capacity strengthening in local fundraising and resource mobilisation
• Training in advocacy and mobilising support
• Coaching and mentorship to strengthen project design and implementation

The opportunity is open to youth-led organisations, higher learning institutions and community-based groups working on biodiversity conservation, sustainable natural resource management and community-based environmental action.

This week, KCDF's Founders, Advisory Council, Board, Trust, Adapo, Friends of KCDF US, and Management convened in Nairobi for the 2026 KCDF Entities Retreat.

The retreat provided an important opportunity to reflect on the milestones, achievements, and impact realised across the KCDF entities over the past year. It also fostered peer learning, strengthened collaboration, and enabled a review of our strategic priorities and performance as we continue working towards a shared vision of flourishing and resilient communities.

The convening further focused on enhancing governance and institutional effectiveness, while exploring the implications of Artificial Intelligence for governance and organisational leadership, strengthening our readiness for the future.

When MOMA Renewable Energy joined the Young Environmentalists Innovators Challenge (YEIC), they were producing up to 4,500 litres of bioethanol fuel per month using self-fabricated equipment.

With support from YEIC, MOMA has transformed its operations, increasing its production capacity to 10,000 litres of bioethanol fuel per month. They have also established a dedicated production facility, installed improved distillation equipment, strengthened their internal systems and trained 10 women as sales agents.

MOMA turns spoiled bananas and factory-rejected sugarcane into clean cooking-grade bioethanol while converting production residue into animal feed.
Their story shows what can happen when a promising environmental innovation gets the right support to grow.

Now, it could be your turn.

For Eugine Andati from Kakamega, staying in school was never guaranteed.

As the second child in a family of nine, financial challenges made his education journey difficult. While at Ingotse Secondary School, Eugine was forced to drop out and take up menial jobs to raise money for his school fees.

Then, KCDF stepped in. With support from KCDF, Eugine was able to return to school, complete his secondary education and pursue his dream of becoming a teacher. Today, he is studying for a Bachelor’s Degree in Education Science at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, with KCDF continuing to support his tuition and upkeep.

Eugine’s story reminds us that sometimes, the difference between dropping out and achieving a dream is simply having someone who believes in you.

There are more deserving students like Eugine who need that support today. Together, we can help keep them in school and give them a chance to build a better future.

KCDF is looking for a qualified and experienced Accountant to join our Finance team.

The Accountant will support KCDF and its related entities in the timely processing and verification of financial transactions, financial reporting, grant management, funder reporting, audits and other finance activities.

What we are looking for:
✅ Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field
✅ CPA (K)
✅ At least 5 years’ experience in a similar role or equivalent
✅ Proficiency in accounting principles and practices, with familiarity with accounting software, preferably Microsoft Dynamics 365
✅ Strong skills in budgeting, financial analysis, reporting and grant accounting
✅ Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams and communicate financial concepts clearly

The successful candidate will also support financial compliance, audits, donor reporting and grant management.

When M-taka applied to the Young Environmentalists Innovation Challenge (YEIC), they were looking to strengthen their model and scale their impact. As a winner of the second cohort, the support from KCDF has helped them grow their circular economy innovation and strengthen their organisation.

In 2024, M-taka had reached 5,000 community members, recovered 850 tonnes of materials and created about 30 direct jobs.

Today, they have:
✅Reached over 25,000 community members across 10 counties
✅Recovered over 4,100 metric tonnes of waste
✅Created and sustained over 3,100 jobs

Beyond funding, M-Taka benefited from capacity building in areas including Financial Management, business modelling and governance.

KCDF is inviting applications for the Sowing the Seeds of Change Programme – Roots Track, a grant opportunity that supports youth-led initiatives advancing biodiversity conservation, sustainable natural resource management, and community-based environmental action.
