🎓 A New Milestone for Roots!

With the school now reopened, it’s time to celebrate a major first for Roots: we are sending our first secondary students to continue their education!

This year, Grade 10 has been enrolled for the first time under the new curriculum - something new for Kenya and new for us too!

- Michael and Reagan are joining Hospital Hill
- Mary is joining St. George’s, thanks to her exceptional results - marking the first time a Roots-supported student is attending a National school!

We are currently supporting 15 students in boarding school and aim to support 15 more this year! Enrollment is ongoing, and we are excited to help more students pursue their educational journey.

🎒📚 Today marks back-to-school for millions of children across Kenya.
The doors of our beloved school are reopening after a well-deserved break for both our staff and our pupils.

We would like to take this moment to sincerely thank all our partners and friends for their unwavering support throughout 2025. Despite the many challenges we faced, you stood by our side every step of the way.

As we step into 2026, we hold on to hope. We believe this will be a year of change - a year where we can finally offer every child we serve a safe and dignified place to learn!

This is her third year, Zipporah has been supported by our high school sponsorship programme. During the holiday, she joined tuition sessions that strengthened her learning and prepared her for the final term of the year📝

Beyond academics, Zipporah also enjoyed activities like dancing and acrobatics. These experiences gave her moments of fun and relaxation while allowing her to explore her talents and bond with her peers.

Now, as the last school term of the year begins, Zipporah returns with renewed energy, ready to make the most of her studies and every opportunity ahead. Her story reflects the resilience and determination our students carry with them🙏🏽

Dance has a way of unlocking joy, and this holiday, our pupils experienced it first-hand.

Thanks to the support of BIC Kenya and , our space came alive with movement, laughter, and energy as learners took part in fun dance sessions.

What started with shy steps soon turned into confident twirls and bold expressions, with every child finding their own rhythm 🎶

Beyond the moves, these moments built confidence, encouraged teamwork, and gave our learners a space to explore creativity without limits.

These dance sessions take place every holiday, offering a safe and welcoming space where not only our pupils, but also children from the wider community, can come together, have fun, and enjoy☺️

Today, we honour all those who dedicate their time, energy, and compassion to serving others. At Roots Institute Centre in Mathare, our mission is simple yet powerful: to provide children from the most vulnerable backgrounds with access to education, dignity, and hope for a brighter future.

Every lesson taught, every meal shared, and every smile nurtured is an act of humanity that transforms lives. 💙

On this World Humanitarian Day, we celebrate not only global humanitarian heroes, but also our teachers, partners, and community who make change possible here in Mathare every single day.

Over 105 students from our Junior High and High School sponsorship programmes received brand-new backpacks, thanks to the generous support of Crédit Agricole through the Helping Hand Initiative.

For many of these learners, some of whom had been using plastic bags or worn-out carriers, this gift was more than just a school bag. It was a gesture of care that brought renewed pride, dignity, and motivation as they returned for the second half of the term🤲🏾

The joy on their faces during the distribution spoke volumes. These backpacks now accompany them daily, making it easier and more dignified to carry their books and learning materials🎒

We are deeply grateful to Crédit Agricole the Helping Hand Initiative and Helene Smadja for their ongoing commitment to our mission and to the children we serve.

Happy International Youth Day✨

In the heart of Mathare, one of Kenya’s largest informal settlements, young people grow up surrounded by both challenges and possibilities. Many face limited opportunities, yet their determination to learn, create, and dream remains unshaken.

Empowering the youth here means more than education it’s about providing safe spaces, mentorship, and skills that open doors to a better future. When given the chance, these young minds can rise above their circumstances and lead change within their community🤲🏽

Today, we celebrate the courage, resilience, and potential of Mathare’s youth a generation ready to build a brighter tomorrow. 💛

A Month of Purpose, Progress, and Possibility✊🏾

We began the month by welcoming H.E. Henk Jan Bakker, Ambassador of the Netherlands Embassy of the Netherlands in Kenya our school. In a moving conversation with our pupils, we reflected on human rights, social justice, and the lived realities of our community and the role education plays in shaping brighter futures.

We then hosted an unforgettable event at the French Embassy in Kenya and Somalia where we shared our ongoing efforts to build a permanent school for Mathare. We’re incredibly grateful to H.E. Arnaud Suquet, Ambassador of France to Kenya and Somalia, and the team for standing with us on this journey.

On 12th July, we held our first community clean-up in Kosovo Cluster 1, bringing together youth groups from Sun City, Reformer, Oblock, and Riverside. Our school chairman, Kissmart Bakra led the day’s activities with a true show of unity, action, and hope for a cleaner, safer environment♻

We also marked Bastille Day with a special celebration, a symbol of friendship between communities across borders and generations🇫🇷

Meanwhile, our school participated in a nationwide vaccination campaign, ensuring our pupils received the care and protection they deserve💉

In our journey toward building a permanent school, we began an important milestone: a geotechnical study to assess the soil and inform future construction.

Our pupils in Grades 4, 5, and 6 also enjoyed an exciting educational trip, expanding their horizons beyond the classroom through exploration and play.

We had a delightful visit from Paloma of .kenya, who spent time at our school and met our pupils, a kind gesture that brought smiles and lasting memories☺️

We closed the month with a generous donation of 30 laptops from Africa Global Logistics - Kenya paving the way for digital learning, university support, and the future ICT lab at our permanent school.
