In the past four months alone, 815 people have accessed services at the . This is clear evidence that grassroots and community-based organizations are essential in delivering services, strengthening resilience, and reaching underserved populations.

Despite their impact, systemic barriers continue to limit their access to funding, partnerships, and decision-making spaces.

Localization must move beyond policy statements into concrete implementation. Governments have a critical role to play by creating enabling frameworks, simplifying compliance requirements, and investing directly in locally led initiatives.
If we are serious about inclusive and sustainable development, then supporting grassroots organizations is not optional yet it is essential.

These photos were taken in 2017, one year after BORTOPRA’s existence began.
Since then, we’ve faced challenges and pushed through them all. The journey hasn’t been easy, but we never gave up.
We’ve grown into a bigger creative community space, a hub for talent and a place for empowerment.
Today, we’re not just telling a story…we’re writing history.

“It always seems impossible until it’s done.”

We have been strategic in empowering young people in the arts and creative space. Our music studio has contributed significantly to social and economic inclusion by bringing together refugees and host communities, using music as a unifying force.

Under hashtag an audio and visual team, we have created job opportunities for many young people within the community, equipping them with practical skills and access to income-generating activities.

We are deeply committed to expanding our work in the entertainment industry, creating inclusive pathways where refugees can access employment opportunities without facing barriers related to documentation. We believe that talent, proper nurturing, and high performance should be the key drivers of success in the market.

recognizes that humanitarian aid is declining, but we see this moment not as a setback rather, as a powerful turning point.
We are embracing a bold shift toward self-reliance, empowering refugees to rise from receivers of aid to providers of quality services, fueled by their own talent, skills, and knowledge. This transformation restores dignity, unlocks potential, and proves that refugees are not defined by their circumstances but by their strength, creativity, and resilience.
The road may hold challenges, but nothing can stop this remarkable journey. Together, we are building a future where refugees stand not in need, but in greatness.

Advocacy is a powerful tool for change especially when it’s led by those with lived experience.

Refugee-Led Organizations (RLOs) in Kenya speak directly to the challenges affecting their communities. Their efforts are not only authentic but deeply impactful. 💪🏽

I recently reconnected with my longtime friend Jonas Ndayisenga, Co-Founder & Executive Director of Umoja Refugee Creative. We reflected on our journey pushing for refugee-led approaches and fighting for meaningful engagement that led to the recognition of RLOs in Kenya. 🇰🇪

RLOs bring an intimate understanding of refugee struggles and offer grassroots solutions that drive lasting, sustainable change.

Nairobi is a major urban hub for refugees full of opportunity, but also marked by challenges like overcrowding, limited services, and exploitation. Yet, refugee-led initiatives are turning those challenges into platforms for empowerment and resilience. ✊🏾

This is the power of community. This is the strength of refugee leadership. 💥

My Journey of Resilience
When I first arrived in Kenya, the challenges felt overwhelming, unfamiliar surroundings,
🚫 No job opportunities
🗣️ Language barrier
💸 No financial support
And this was very common to many Fellow Refugees in the urban area
I even worked on a construction site for 2 of the hardest months of my life. It was physically and emotionally exhausting. Yet, it taught me resilience and the value of hard work But I never gave up. Instead of giving up, I chose to rise.

I told myself: "Challenges are stepping stones." and Every brick I lifted reminded me of the dreams I carry. 💭💪🏽 I leaned into my talents and experiences and One year later, I founded BOROPRA GROUP a Refugee Led Organization with a mission to inspire and empower refugees and everybody from a humble background to become self-reliant and pursue their dreams 💪🏽✨
It’s not just about surviving yet it’s about thriving.
We are not victims of our past; we are builders of a new future. 🧱🌍✨
Now BORTOPRA Serves Hundreds in Skills Development ,Mentorship , Information Sharing with a huge space for the community.

We may come from difficult circumstances, but with hope, vision, and community, we can achieve something powerful.
Myself and many more Refugees prove that we are no longer seen solely as beneficiaries of aid yet we are contributors, innovators, and active participants in the social and economic fabric of society.

Music for Refugees: More Than Just a Melody, It's Medicine for the Soul 🎶💖
In the face of unimaginable hardship, music becomes a universal language of healing. For refugees, it's not just a tune, it’s a lifeline. A melody that speaks directly to the heart, soothing the wounds of trauma, displacement, and loss.
Through the rhythms of songs, they find a moment of peace in a world that’s often too loud with chaos. Music offers them a way to express the inexpressible, a bridge between cultures, and a source of strength when words fall short. It reminds them that they are not alone, that their pain is heard, and that hope still exists.

In times of uncertainty, music is medicine—restoring what has been broken, mending invisible wounds, and igniting the spark of resilience.🔥

Let’s keep sharing the healing power of music. 🌍🎵
