The Ministry of Labor, skill and Innovation says the introduction of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) in the country is very critical to Malawi 2063 development agenda.

Speaking during a stakeholders’ workshop of RPL in Mponela on Monday, Director of Administration George Mwasinga said the initiative creates opportunities for workers to improve their employment prospects.

He said Malawi has taken a significant step towards bringing skills acquired outside formal classrooms into the national qualifications system.

According to Mwasinga the programme recognizes skills gained through experience by certifying workers through the Technical, Entrepreneurial and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TEVETA).

On her part, Edina Chimpeni, Don Bosco Tech Africa, local project officer said the programme has help experienced workers without formal qualifications gain nationally recognized certification and improve their access to economic opportunities.

Chimpeni further said Don Bosco Tech is committed to pump in the funds that are needed to make sure that as a nation we have this framework in place that will help contributes directly to the country’s long-term development ambitions.

“We are looking at the development, Don Bosco Tech Africa is there to pump in the funds that are needed to make sure that as a nation we have this framework in place, that will join all other tools together at national level

Employers Consultative association of Malawi (ECAM) Executive director Gorge Khakhi urged employers to should support the recognition of prior learning initiative because we have a lot of people with lots of skills that we can use in our work places and improve productivity

“Therefore, if they have certification for those skills it means we will be encouraging them and promote them to work in those industry, thousands of people with skills but are not recognized by recognize them we are creating employment, people with skills do increase productivity in business.

“Most of our workers especially those who are in informal economy, they don’t have relevant skills that are actually required by employers, so we believe that this framework will then be able to bring these workers with appropriate skills so that they are to be relevant in the industry,” according to Malawi Congress and trade union representative Limbani Kachale.

The Government of Malawi, through the Ministry of Labour, Skills and Innovation, launched the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) initiative in 2021 to formally recognize skills acquired through informal and non-formal learning pathways.
