Madaraka means "power" or "authority."

Across Kenya's drylands, we see that power every day in women, youth, and refugees building livelihoods, supporting their loved ones, and creating brighter futures for themselves.

Today, we celebrate their resilience, determination, and potential.

Happy Madaraka Day. 🇰🇪

A changing world calls for people who keep showing up, adapting, and building anyway.

Our 2025 Annual Report, Built to Adapt, shares stories of families and communities across Africa’s drylands who are creating stronger livelihoods and brighter futures.

To our donors and partners, thank you for making this work possible and for continuing to invest in communities and their potential.

Feel Good Friday.

BOMA ends this week on a high note as we officially join the NGO Refugee Group (NRG), a key coordination and collaboration platform for organizations engaged in refugee programming.

This is an important milestone as we continue strengthening our work with refugee and host communities through economic inclusion, resilience, and sustainable livelihoods.

We look forward to learning, contributing, and building stronger partnerships alongside organizations committed to restoring dignity, opportunity, and hope.

Imagine waking up every day not knowing what your children will eat.
For many mothers in Africa's drylands, this is a reality.

“I used to wake up worried about what my children would eat. Now we have our business, and we eat.”— Pusiko Kochale.

For Pusiko, motherhood once meant constant worry. Searching for work. Trying to find something, anything, to feed her children. Today, she runs a business with two partners, earns an income, and her children eat.

As we look ahead to Mother’s Day this week, we celebrate mothers like Pusiko. The kind of change she has experienced is what we see every day through BOMA’s work.

What does opportunity look like for women in Africa’s drylands?

Sometimes it looks like three women standing proudly in their shop holding the produce they sell.

The income they earn brings stability to their households and the dignity that comes with providing for their families. The produce in their hands also means healthier meals at home and in their communities.

Across the drylands, women are often at the heart of building stronger households and communities.

At BOMA, this is what opportunity can look like. So far, our programs have helped more than 1.2M families move out of extreme poverty.

In Africa’s drylands, when the rains fail, livelihoods disappear with them.

At BOMA, communities are building environment-friendly businesses like tree nurseries and apiaries that help families earn an income while protecting the land they depend on.

Since 2022, nearly 11,000 people have built sustainable livelihoods, improving life for 71,000+ family members, with support from the IKEA Foundation.

As the world reflects on Earth Day this week, what remains clear through BOMA's work is that when communities have opportunity, they protect the land that sustains them.

What would you do if you had nothing to take home to your family?

Some nights, Francis Lelenguyia delayed going home. Not because he was busy, but because he had nothing to bring back for his wife and four children.

A blacksmith who forged spears for a living, Francis struggled to produce more than one or two spears a week. Sometimes he made dangerous trips into the forest for charcoal, risking encounters with wild elephants, just to keep his forge burning.

Then Kuza Jamii entered the picture. Today, Francis’ story looks very different.

What does it take to end extreme poverty in Kenya?

On Tuesday, our Executive Director Thomas Kong'ong'o joined partners on Citizen TV Kenya for a panel discussion on Kuza Jamii: The Bold Plan to End Extreme Poverty in Kenya.

At BOMA, our vision is to end extreme poverty, which is why conversations like this matter. Kuza Jamii shows what is possible when government, partners, and communities work together to help vulnerable households build sustainable livelihoods.

A big thank you to Village Enterprise Enterprise for coordinating this important conversation.

Last week, on a day like this, we marked a proud milestone in Wajir.

Under Kuza Jamii, we held a symbolic handover to Government, formally marking the shift to full government-led implementation of Economic Inclusion Programs across Kenya.

Kuza Jamii was designed to support vulnerable households to move from short-term coping to stable livelihoods through Business Groups and VSLAs. Under Kuza Jamii 1 and 2, BOMA reached 1,950 households in Wajir.

The ceremony was graced by Madam Esther Maina (MBS), Secretary Administration, State Department for Social Protection and Senior Citizen Affairs, and Dr. Lynett Ochuma, Acting Secretary, Directorate of Social Development. We were also honored by the presence of our UK Government partners, Eduarda Lobo Mendonca Gray and David Kinyua, MSc.

Manuals, motorbikes, laptops, and tablets were formally handed over to support continued implementation. Both teams also visited Kuza Jamii 2.0 groups to see firsthand the progress households are making.
