What does integration of gender in agrifood systems entail?

Through the She Leads African Food Futures (SHEAF) Fellowship, AWARD is equipping women leading agribusinesses, food systems research, agricultural trade, and development programming with knowledge, skills, and tools to deploy a gender lens in their work.

SHEAF Fellowship is working with 25 African women leaders from Kenya, Malawi, and Senegal to help them interrogate their processes, programming, and policies to identify gender gaps and how to address them.

The Fellows range from founders of agribusinesses and development organizations to researchers and finance experts.

Together with their mentors, the Fellows recently concluded a practical training program on ‘Integration of gender in agrifood policies and programs’.

From the realization that gender-responsiveness means going beyond looking at the number of women, to understanding that there are tools which can support meaningful integration of gender in programs, the Fellows testify to acquiring useful knowledge and skills that they intend to immediately deploy in their work.
