Happy World Environment Day!

Today, Africa Harvest joins the world in commemorating World Environment Day and reaffirming our commitment to protecting the environment for present and future generations.

Environmental protection is one of our core values. Through Strategic Objective 3 of our 2023-2027 Strategic Plan, we are working to increase smallholder farmers' resilience to climate change by promoting climate-smart agriculture, sustainable natural resource management, and innovative solutions that strengthen livelihoods while protecting the planet.

As we celebrate Madaraka Day and reflect on Kenya's attainment of self-rule in 1963, we are reminded of the power of investing in people. Through capacity building, technology transfer, and skills development for youth and women, we can increase agricultural production and productivity, boost smallholder farmers' incomes, and strengthen sustainable food systems.

In line with this year's theme, Education, Skills and the Future, we must continue investing in young people, who are the future of agriculture and key drivers of innovation, productivity, and economic growth. Every step we take to equip them with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities they need contributes to building the food-secure and resilient Kenya and the Africa we aspire to see.

On this International Seeds Day, an opinion piece by Kennedy Oyugi, Africa Harvest’s Agricultural Economist, published in the Standard Newspaper, explores how we can bridge seed access amid ongoing global disruptions.

Africa Harvest is at the forefront of these efforts, creating employment and income opportunities for youth and women through community-level seed production.

In 2025 alone, under the DTCs 4 Youth Jobs Creation project, young people, especially young women, produced and sold 95 metric tons of assorted seed, generating approximately KSh 19 million.

Africa Harvest participated in the EAGC Agribusiness Expo held at Chuka University in Tharaka Nithi County. The event brought together over 1,500 farmers and stakeholders under the theme “Climate-Smart Technologies and Practices for Sustainable Food Systems.”

The expo spotlighted climate-smart solutions that reduce post-harvest losses while improving grain quality, storage, and farmer incomes. Technologies such as hermetic storage systems, tarpaulins, mobile silos, threshers, and shellers demonstrated how innovation can enhance productivity, strengthen market access, and build resilient food systems.

The event was officiated by Prof. Henry Mutembei, Vice Chancellor of Chuka University Official, who underscored the University’s role in advancing food loss reduction solutions. He emphasized that Chuka University remains committed to driving agricultural transformation through research, training, and industry partnerships that equip future professionals with market-relevant skills.

The expo aligned with the AGRA RE-GAIN project, implemented by Eastern Africa Grain Council in consortium with Africa Harvest Biotech Foundation International in Embu and Tharaka Nithi Counties, focusing on scaling practical solutions that improve post-harvest management and farmer returns.

Bringing together farmers, researchers, agribusinesses, and development partners, the expo reinforced the critical role of collaboration in scaling impactful, farmer-centered solutions

As International Women’s Month comes to a close, our CEO, Dr. Florence Wambugu, highlights the unique traits that set women apart.

Amplifying women’s voices should not end in March. We must continue to celebrate and showcase their strength, resilience, and capabilities.

Dr. Wambugu reminds us, “When you educate one woman, you educate the village.”

Special thanks to KBC Channel 1 TV for helping share this powerful message.

“I see women greatly benefitting from this project.” Said Mercy Karimi, Farmer and Village-based Advisor from Embu County. “Once women are able to secure their maize and access the market, their livelihoods will improve,” She added.

Women make up 50% of the 143,000 participants set to benefit from the RE-GAIN program, focused on reducing post-harvest losses among smallholder farmers.
