Trees & Culture is a community based organization formed by young community members of Ruai (Embakasi). Trees & Culture entails mostly environmental conservation, agriculture and environmental education.Besides the environmental issues we are active as well on the field of culture and free time activities for youths. omote eco-friendly and conscious approach to local environment, to support the pro-active attitudes among the community members and to create new work opportunities and to provide the youths open space for cultural activities as dance and art work. Current activities
Trees & Culture are currently implementing three projects – one focused on agroforestry, second focused on tree nurseries in schools and environmental education, third is focused on free time activities for Ruai youths. The agroforestry project is implemented in the chamber near to Nairobi river, the land, which was provided by NEEMA. Here was the vegetable farm settled and trees are being planted to help to revitalise the deforestated dry soil. The project is being funded from the sources from charity event which was organised in Prague, Czech Republic, on 6th January 2011. The cooperation with Jomo Kenyatta University is being established in this time. Project was already supported by …. and another support from TARDA is being awaited. The financial suistanibility of the project is guaranteed by the income from the selling of the vegetable. The tree nurseries and environmetal education project is right now in the process of pilotage. The aim of the project is to establish the tree nurseries in few schools in Ruai and run the environmental education sessions within the school eco-clubs. The benefit of the project is that the schools will be able to fundraise financial sources from the tree nurseries while the surrounding of the schools will be improved and process of environmental education will be started. The cooperation with Ruai Primary and Gituamba Primary has been already established. This project is run on voluntary basis. Unfortunately in Ruai there is no open space for youths, where they could spend free time in active and creative way. This is the reason why Trees and Culture is trying to establish own cultural youth centre. The aim of the project is to provide to the youth of Ruai community a space for free time activities as traditional and modern dance, music an different types of dance.
