‎In Kenya🇰🇪 and throughout Africa🌍, this day reminds us that millions of children still face poverty, disability discrimination, violence, neglect, child labour, early marriage, and lack of access to education.🤔🫢

Today us World Environment Day. Let us be reminded that a clean and healthy environment is our constitutional right according to Article 42 and a universal human right. But Article 69 indicates that it is the state's and our obligation to protect, manage and conserve our environment. Ours is not a clean and healthy environment, thanks to our apathy towards our environment. We throw our waste everywhere hoping for it to disappear. Most of our neighborhoods now look like dumpsites. What a disgusting example we are all setting for our children. Let each of us take control. Let us manage our own waste. It starts with me

"To promote responsible environmental behaviour (REB) in society and advocate for children’s right to clean, green, safe, healthy, and child-friendly environments so that they are able to fully realize their potential, as outlined in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child" is CER's cause.
We also believe in raising awareness on environmental risks affecting children and communities.
Disaster management knowledge should be part of the requirements for school personnel. Prevention and preparedness which are two of the phases of disaster management should be regularly monitored in entire school environments.
It is very disturbing to accept that like virtually every aspect of our environment, school environments are regarded casually, with complete disregard for the safety and well-being of not just our children but all people in our society. We have the very astute Environment Management and Coordination Act of 1999 (EMCA "99) in place and the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) but our environment is the root cause of the biggest percentage of morbidity and mortality in our country.
Why don't we focus more on school environments where these our most vulnerable members spend the biggest portion of their lives?
We at CER send our very sincere condolences to the bereaved families, Utumishi Academy and the entire nation, and pray that this tragedy will cause us all to wake up to the seriousness with which we must consider our environment in general and school environments in particular. May the lives of these girls count for something. God gave us the environment to enjoy and conserve for future generations. It starts with me!

The environment is currently green with trees, vegetation and what looks like a promising bumper harvest. It is a good time to plant trees but we need guidance. Let us consult so that we plant the most appropriate and profitable trees for maximum benefit. BUT, let us plant even if we don't have land. Potted plants have many benefits too.

In Japan, instead of cutting down significant trees that stand in the way of construction projects, engineers and arborists practice a traditional horticultural method known as ishoku (tree transplantation).

During this careful process, workers dig around the tree's base, protect its root ball with straw matting and rope to keep the soil and roots intact, and safely move it to a new location.

While people sometimes confuse this practice with nebari—a Japanese gardening term that actually refers to the beautiful look of a tree's surface roots—the actual work of relocating these large trees requires months of preparation, including pruning the roots early to help the tree survive the move.

This respectful and eco-friendly technique is deeply connected to Japanese cultural and Shinto traditions that view ancient trees as sacred, showing that modern city growth can still honor and protect nature.

⚠️ Parents, guardians and communities in Kenya, please stay alert! ⚠️

Children have been going missing at an alarming rate lately. Some disappear from school, others while playing outside, and many cases never get enough attention. We cannot afford to stay silent anymore.

On Tuesday, someone followed my brother’s son while he was walking home from school. When the boy noticed the man following him, he started running. The man also began chasing him. Out of fear, the child ran into a nearby homestead for safety.

The scary part is that the man stood outside looking for him. But when he saw the boy coming out with two men from the homestead, he quickly ran away and disappeared into a nearby bush.

Another incident happened where I live. Early in the morning, a small car carrying two men and a woman approached school children waiting for the school bus at the gate. They claimed the bus had developed a problem and said they could take some children to school and come back for the others.

Thankfully, one alert mother questioned them and asked why the school had not communicated anything to parents. As they were talking, the actual school bus arrived — and the suspicious car immediately drove away.

Parents, please teach your children:
✔️ Never enter a stranger’s car.
✔️ Run to safe places or crowded homes when in danger.
✔️ Scream loudly and attract attention.
✔️ Report suspicious people immediately.

Schools should also communicate directly with parents in case of any transport changes.

Let us stop assuming “it cannot happen here.”
It is happening.
Let us protect our children together.

I've heard it said that we are one of the better economies in our region. Indeed if you look around, it is evident. But again I dare say, we are also one of the dirtiest societies this side of the Sahara! What happened? Today we notice and marvel at clean places! Because they are rare, although a clean and healthy environment is not only a constitutional right but a universal human right. We scatter our waste recklessly to the detriment of our comfort and health. Let us style up. We deserve better. Let us make it happen. It starts with ME! And YOU!!

Environmental Justice
All people—regardless of race, color, national origin, or income—are entitled to equal protection from environmental and health hazards and equal access to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies. Environmental justice (EJ) is the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, national origin, or income with respect to the development, implementation and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations and policies. Environmental justice is a social movement to address the unfair exposure of poor and marginalized communities to harms associated with resource extraction, hazardous waste, and other land uses.
Sadly, due to lack of awareness and poor implementation and enforcement of environmental laws and policies many "accidents" have been happening to the detriment of the community of life including injuries and death of human beings and wildlife as well as damage to the environment. Many of these can be avoided through appreciation of and concerted effort to sustainably utilize the environment for the good of present and future generations. Together we can. Let's do it.
