In , IUCN and ARA Norte, IP have reinforced their partnership to accelerate implementation of the Resources Project in Cabo Delgado. Together, we conducted technical and steering meetings in Pemba, Mozambique, to align on strategies, deepen institutional cooperation, and ensure the project’s objectives are met.

This strengthened collaboration will enhance the project’s ability to restore watersheds, build climate resilience, and deliver sustainable water resource solutions for communities in northern Mozambique. IUCN Eastern and Southern Africa remains committed to working hand in hand with regional water authorities to drive lasting impact.

IUCN Mozambique actively participated in the 3rd Marine Biodiversity Conference, a unique national platform that blends science, art, and culture to foster synergies and promote an annual dialogue on marine biodiversity conservation in Mozambique.
This year’s focus included: Ecosystem-Based Adaptation, Marine Conservation Areas, Coastal and Marine Biodiversity, and Environmental Education
Leb by Tara Pelembe, Silene Bila, Olavio Mazivila and Temóteo Mucavele, IUCN hosted a side event titled “How can the Great Blue Wall contribute significantly to improving coastal livelihoods and marine biodiversity in Mozambique?”
Key themes discussed included The Dar es Salaam Declaration as a regional policy framework; Nature-based Solutions (NbS) with emphasis on women and youth inclusion; Integration of science, policy; and private sector to accelerate the blue transformation.
This event was highly relevant, as it enabled participants to identify strategic priorities and pathways in the the implementation of the Great Blue Wall in Mozambique.
The Great Blue Wall is being implemented through impactful projects such as:
ReSea | SOMN | CORE RESTOR | WIOCOR and others, driving restoration, resilience, and inclusive governance across Mozambique’s seascapes.
Together, we’re building a regenerative and inclusive blue future for Mozambique and the Western Indian Ocean!

As we are approaching the , In , Morrumbene communities have been selected for pilot Restoration efforts in seascape

We’re excited to share that the communities of Jogo Maiwane and Jogo Matuvi in Morrumbene District, Mozambique have been selected as pilot sites for a new community-based mangrove restoration initiative under the CORE RESTOR Project.

This milestone was marked by a joint field visit involving representatives from the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Fisheries, the District Government of Morrumbene, and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

The visit aimed to inform and engage local administrative and community entities, ensuring transparency and ownership from the outset.

The selection was based on ecological, socio-economic, and technical criteria, aligning with our shared goal of promoting sustainable development and resilient coastal ecosystems in Inhambane Province.

Community engagement is at the heart of this work. Local leadership and the Community Fisheries Council were briefed on the project's objectives, their roles, and the importance of active participation throughout the restoration process.

The mission included, at the provincial level, the Provincial Director of Agriculture and Fisheries, the Head of the Fisheries Department, a technician from the Mozambique Oceanographic Institute, and an IUCN officer. At the district level, the District Director of Economic Activities participated on behalf of the District Administrator of Morrumbene, along with the Head of the Fisheries Division.

The CORE RESTOR Project — “Strengthening Coastal Governance and Ecosystem Restoration for a Resilient Blue Economy” — is funded by the Embassy of Ireland and implemented by IUCN in close collaboration with the provincial and district governments of Inhambane.

Together, we are restoring nature and strengthening community stewardship for the long term. 💪🏽🌍
